Art auction

Showstoppers

Los Cantantes del Lago presents Showstoppers 13 Sunday, October 23, 4 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church. Political satire

Just back from over the pond and a sold-out run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the politically charged a cappella Kinsey Sicks quartet present “Electile Dysfunction” at the Auditorio de la Ribera Monday, October 24, 6 p.m.

With the race heating up for the U.S. presidency, “Electile Dysfunction” is a timely satire of American politics – a winning combination of tight harmonies and intelligent fun entertainment.

Tango event

Argentine tango quintet and dancers La Siniestra plays a special concert Wednesday, October 26, 7 p.m.  at Lake Chapala Dance and Fitness Studio in Ajijic. A tango show will also be offered by local maestro Juan Rosa and his wife Anita. A cash bar with beer and wine will be available. Guitar concert

Chilean guitarist Wladimier Carrasco gives a free concert at the Centro Cultural Gonzalez Gallo in Chapala as part of the Universidad de Guadalajara’s International Guitar Festival, Wednesday, October 26, 7 p.m.

Singing contest

La Bodega Ajijic restaurant finishes its International Singing Contest 2016 to benefit local charities with a grand finale on Thursday, October 27, 6:30 p.m. Six judges grade participants on voice quality, presentation and diction using a ten-point scale. The audience can vote at one peso per vote. For this last event, all voting proceeds and a percentage of the restaurant’s take goes to St. Andrew’s Anglican Church. Naked Stage

“Time Stands Still” by Donald Margulies is the next production of the Naked Stage Readers Theatre. 

The play is set in Brooklyn and revolves around Sarah, a photo journalist who has returned from covering the Iraq war after being injured by a roadside bomb, and her reporter boyfriend James who is swamped by guilt after leaving Sarah alone in Iraq. They receive a visit from their friend Richard, a photo editor, who introduces them to his new girlfriend Mandy, who is much younger than he. The play focuses on their relationships and Sarah and James’ prospects at a more conventional life. 

The play is directed by L.B. Hamilton and stars Carolyn Cothran, David Goldman, Kevin Leitch and Amanda Miller. Show dates are Friday, October 28; Saturday, October 29 and Sunday, October 30. 

The Naked Stage Theatre is located at Hidalgo 261 in Riberas del Pilar. La Bella Vida 

Artist Tomás Benton creates a unique sense of life humor through his art at a new exhibit at La Bella Vida. 

Says Benton: “I will present various works related to my time as a platoon leader in ‘Nam, in the hope of honoring those who died during this conflict, as well as works related to Mexico’s Dias de los Muertos.”

“Vietnam And Mexico — Celebrating The Dead” opens Friday October 28,  2-5 p.m. in the Garden at La Bella Vida, Constitucion 6 in Ajijic. Refreshments will be served. 

A traditional Day of the Dead altar ceremony will be created Wednesday November 2, 4 p.m. For information call 766-5131.

Ballet

The Ballet de Jalisco, directed by Dariusz Blajer, presents a gala consisting of parts of several classic works at the Auditorio de la Ribera Saturday, October 29, 6 p.m. 

The troupe will interpret at least one contemporary dance piece choreographed by Blajer.

Elegant soloist Marissa Jiménez and six other top soloists from the group will present pas de deux from classical standards such as Romeo and Juliet, Don Quixote, Carmen and Flames of Paris. A contemporary dance based on the biblical story of Cain and Abel and choreographed by Blajer will also be performed. 

Tickets for the Ajijic event, which is sponsored by Viva la Musica, are on sale at the Lake Chapala Society (Thursdays and Fridays, 10 a.m. to noon), the Auditorio de la Ribera, Diane Pearl and Mia’s.

Actor’s scene study 

Moderator and facilitator Roseann Wilshere offers six-week workshops in scene study at Bravo Theatre on Monday afternoons, 3-5:30 p.m., beginning November 7.  

Her technique is based on the book “Audition” by Michael Shurtleff, whose works are based on the methods developed by Russian master Stanislavski.

Actors may be at any level from beginner to experienced. 

Although critique is guided by Wilshere, all the participants are asked to analyze each other’s scenes constructively as an important component of the workshop. 

The scene study workshops are held at the Bravo Theatre. Rio Bravo 10, Ajijic. The cost per class is 350 pesos. Visitors are welcome to come to watch.

Feria Maestros del Arte

More than 85 artists will present their crafts at the 15th Annual Feria Maestros del Arte (Art Masters Fair) Friday, November 11 to Sunday, November 13, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the open-air environment of the Chapala Yacht Club.  

Come meet the artisans in person and help preserve and promote Mexican folk art traditions. The feria is a colorful Mexican fiesta like atmosphere with entertainment and food. Admission is 50 pesos.

JPO bus trips

Viva la Musica! is sponsoring bus trips from Lakeside to the Degollado Theater in Guadalajara to hear concerts by the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra and see the Jalisco Ballet. The buses leave from just east of Farmacia Guadalajara in Ajijic on the Carretera.

Sunday, November 6: Beethoven’s Leonora Overture, and Ninth Symphony. Bus departs 10:30 a.m. Friday, November 25: Live opera “Othello” with the Jalisco State Choir. Bus departs 4:30 p.m., with stop at a fine restaurant. Sunday, December 18: The Jalisco Ballet performs Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite (500 and 600 pesos). Bus departs at 10.30 a.m.

More Viva

The Arias Trio from Bamberg, Germany will give a special concert in a private home in Rancho del Oro Wednesday, November 16.
