Ribera Arts Review - October 29, 2016

Naked Stage

The Naked Stage Readers Theatre presents “Time Stands Still” by Donald Margulies on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, October 28 to 30.

The play is set in Brooklyn and revolves around Sarah, a photo journalist who has returned from covering the Iraq war after being injured by a roadside bomb, and her reporter boyfriend James who is swamped by guilt after leaving Sarah alone in Iraq. 

Directed by L.B. Hamilton, the cast features Carolyn Cothran, David Goldman, Kevin Leitch and Amanda Miller. 

The Naked Stage Theatre is located at Hidalgo 261 in Riberas del Pilar. La Bella Vida 

Artist Tomás Benton creates a unique sense of life humor through his art at a new exhibit at La Bella Vida. 

 “Vietnam And Mexico — Celebrating The Dead” opens Friday, October 28, 2-5 p.m. in the Garden at La Bella Vida, Constitucion 6 in Ajijic. Refreshments will be served and live music will be offered. The show will be up through November 5.

Attendees who would like to honor a recently lost loved one are encouraged to bring a remembrance with them. 

A traditional Day of the Dead altar ceremony will be created Wednesday, November 2, 4 p.m. For information call 766-5131.

Blues

The Bad Boy Blues Band plays Saturday, October 29, 9 p.m. at El BarCo, Carretera Oriente 33-A in Ajijic (next to Pemex). 

Ballet

The Ballet de Jalisco, directed by Dariusz Blajer, presents a gala consisting some classic works at the Auditorio de la Ribera Saturday, October 29, 6 p.m. 

Soloist Marissa Jiménez and six others from the group will present pas de deux from classical standards such as Romeo and Juliet, Don Quixote, Carmen and Flames of Paris. A contemporary dance based on the biblical story of Cain and Abel and choreographed by Blajer will also be performed. 

Tickets for the event, which is sponsored by Viva la Musica, are on sale at the Auditorio, Diane Pearl and Mia’s Boutique.

LLT

This weekend is the last chance to see the Lakeside Little Theatre (LLT) presentation of “Outside Mullingar,” an Irish love story by John Patrick Shanley and directed by Ann Swiston. 

Heartbreaking, funny and ultimately deeply moving, “Outside Mullingar” is a compassionate, delightful work about how it is never too late to take a chance on love. The cast includes David McIntosh, Peter Luciano, Mary Hunt, Doug Pinkerton and Deborah Spitz.

Dance on the Malecon

From Ciudad Altamirano, Guerreo, the Ballet Folklorico Deifilia Yoloxochitl gives a free open-air concert at the Ajijic Malecon, Saturday, October 29, 6 p.m. sponsored by Ballet Folklorico Coxala, the Delegacion Ajijic and the Centro Cultural Ajijic.

Jazz

The Jazz Prophets with Mike Fortier on vocals, Patricia Reyes on keyboards, Juan Manuel Ayala on bass, and Humberto Saucedo on drums play at El BarCo Sunday, October 30, 4:30 p.m. 

Bravo Theatre

“Sylvia,” a comedy by A.R. Gurney, runs at Bravo Theatre November 3-13. Directed by Roseann Wilshere, the play stars Paul Kloegman, Kathleen Carlson, Jayme Littlejohn, Tony Wilshere, Kathleen Morris and Arlene Pace. 

“Sylvia” revolves around a stray dog picked up by a man in mid-life crisis and the effect of his new “relationship” on his marriage. 

The show opens Thursday, November 3 and will run Thursday to Sunday through November 13. Times: Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m.; Thursday and Sunday matinees at 4 p.m. 

During the run of the show the theater will post pictures of dogs brought by its audience members on their lobby bulletin board. The cast and crew will vote for the best five photos on the last day of the run and the winners will be contacted by phone and email. If you bring the photo with you and write your name, email and phone number on the back, Bravo will donate ten percent of the 200-peso ticket price to local dog charities.

Guitar concert

Moisés Sigala gives a recital, “Las Luces del Crepúsculo,” Thursday, November 3, 7 p.m. at the Centro Cultural Gonzalez Gallo (old train station ) in Chapala. These contemporary pieces for guitar relate the essence of evening poetry. One of the featured compositions is  “Tríptico Chapalense,” first played during September’s festival sincrónico.  Entrance is 50 pesos.

Folk art

Luise Neal-Pedroza opens her show “Mexico Blooms,” with works focusing on scenes of people, and places of Mexico and portraits of Frida Kahlo, Friday, November 4, 5-8 p.m. at La Mision restaurant in West Ajijic. 

Neal-Pedroza is a folk artist and photographer who paints on tin using gouache and also on canvas. She grew up in the Mexican-American community of Decoto, California and married into a family from southern Mexico. 

She is inspired to paint scenes of Mexican life, men and woman and children in profile using the classical bright and rich colors of this country. 

Art Auction

Efren Gonzalez will wield the gavel at an art auction Friday, November 4, 4 p.m. on the Ajijic Plaza. The event will benefit his continuing work on the Day of the Dead mural being constructed in front of the San Andres Church in Ajijic. Affordable prices will be offered on oils, water colors, pastels, sculpture, drawings and more. Snacks and drinks will be served. For more information, call (331) 703-3942.

LLT Playhouse Series

As part of its ongoing Playhouse Series, Lakeside Little Theatre presents “The Audience,” starring Helen Mirren as Queen Elizabeth II, from the National Theatre in London. Written by Peter Morgan and directed by Stephen Daldry, “The Audience” will be shown Saturday, November 5, 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, November 6, 3 p.m. Tickets, 200 pesos, are on sale at the LLT box office Wednesdays and Thursdays, 10 .m. to noon. Creative Coloring

Creatively mindful art is a coloring experience for adults with benefits for focus and stress release and a means to exercise the brain, and improve hand/eye coordination. 

This new activity begins Thursday, November 3, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Lake Chapala Society Arts Patio.

Collective showing

Galeria de Arte Axixic exhibits paintings, etchings, sculptures and retablos at a collective showing opening Saturday, November 5, 3-7 p.m. See works by Judy Dykstra-Brown, Jesus Lopez Vega, Antonio Lope Vega, Tomas Benton, De Paul Durham, Isidro Xilonsochitl, Jesus Lopez Garcia, Xill Fessenden, Pat Apt, Luis Valvi, Gabriel Mariscal and Betty Petersen. Music, botanas and cocktails will enliven the show at Rio Zula 1, corner of Ocampo in West Ajijic.

Folkloric dance

As a fundraiser for improvements to the Auditorio de la Ribera, the Ballet Folkloricio Ixtlahuacan offer a rousing presentation of Mexican folk dances from Michoacan, Veracruz and Oaxaca Sunday, November 6, noon at the Auditorio de la Ribera. This dance group has won many top prizes in state competitions. 

Also appearing are Mariachi Tecueces from Tepatitlan, who will perform the traditional style mariachi typically found in the Los Altos region in north-western Jalisco. Their performance will end with “full brass” renditions of modern mariachi. 

The group has been recognized at the national level for their work in preserving the authentic old-style mariachi.

ASA meets

Artist Ted Shaw is the speaker at the next meeting of the Ajijic Society of the Arts, Monday, November 7, 10:30 a.m. at La Bodega Restaurant, 16 de Septiembre 124 in Ajijic. 

Following a career in corporate sales management and business ownership, Shaw embarked on a journey of self-discovery and today is an international artist and successful entrepreneur enhancing lives around the world painting life-transformational art. He is also a master fire-walking instructor, writer and poet. Shaw’s healing art helps to restore wholeness at the mental, emotional and spiritual levels. He will paint an aura of a random person at the meeting.

Actor’s scene study 

Moderator and facilitator Roseann Wilshere offers six-week workshops in scene study at Bravo Theatre on Monday afternoons, 3-5:30 p.m., beginning November 7.  

Her technique is based on the book “Audition” by Michael Shurtleff, whose works are based on the methods developed by Russian master Stanislavski.

Actors may be at any level from beginner to experienced. 

Although critique is guided by Wilshere, all the participants are asked to analyze each other’s scenes constructively as an important component of the workshop. 

The scene study workshops are held at the Bravo Theatre. Rio Bravo 10, Ajijic. The cost for the six classes is 350 pesos. Visitors are welcome to come and watch.

Galen

Pianist Galen performs two private 90-minute concerts Monday, November 7 and Tuesday. November 8. Along with four other top lakeside musicians, Galen will take the audience on a musical journey including old musicals, pop and romantic ballads, all in unique arrangements.  These unforgettable candlelight concerts are set in the artist’s home. Jazz concert

Blue Velvet, featuring award-winning singer Griselda Piña, gives a concert for jazz lovers at the Auditorio de la Ribera, Thursday, November 10, 7 p.m. Tickets (100 pesos in advance, 150 pesos on the day of the concert) are available at the Auditorio, Mia’s Boutique and Diane Pearl. 

Feria Maestros del Arte

More than 85 artists will present their crafts at the 15th Annual Feria Maestros del Arte (Art Masters Fair) Friday, November 11 to Sunday, November 13, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the open-air environment of the Chapala Yacht Club.  

Come meet the artisans in person and help preserve and promote Mexican folk art traditions. The feria is a colorful Mexican fiesta-like atmosphere with entertainment and food. Admission is 50 pesos.

JPO bus trips

Viva la Musica! is sponsoring bus trips from Lakeside to the Degollado Theater in Guadalajara to hear concerts by the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra and see the Jalisco Ballet. The buses leave from just east of Farmacia Guadalajara in Ajijic on the Carretera.

Sunday, November 6: Beethoven’s Leonora Overture, and Ninth Symphony. Bus departs 10:30 a.m. Friday, November 25: Live opera “Othello” with the Zapopan Choir. Bus departs 4:30 p.m., with stop at a fine restaurant. Sunday, December 18: The Jalisco Ballet performs Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite (500 and 600 pesos). Bus departs at 10.30 a.m.
