Ribera Arts Review – November 12, 2016

Feria de Maestro del Arte

More than 85 artists will present their crafts at the 15th Annual Feria Maestros del Arte Friday and Saturday, November 11 and 12, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, November 13, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the open-air environment of the Chapala Yacht Club located at the corner of Paseo Ramon Corona and Avenida Gonzalez Gallo. Entertainment is offered during the show.

The artists invited each year to attend the Feria Maestros del Arte pay no expenses, fees or percentage of sales. The organization pays their travel expenses and they are housed for the three days with volunteer hosts.

The Feria receives donations from patrons such as Los Amigos del Arte Popular in the United States and Megacable in Mexico, among others. Los Amigos’ generous donation will be helping to pay for the rented buses from Chiapas and Oaxaca that bring the artists to the show, while Megacable donates advertising on their cable channels.

The other way the Feria continues is the Artists Supporting the Feria (ASF) booth of donated art from each artisan, and also to raffle off a another unique piece of every artist’s work, also donated.

The only income at the show comes from the 50-peso entrance fee and revenue brought in at the ASF booth and the raffle.

This year, proceeds from the raffle will be split between the Feria and Operation Feed, an organization that ”gives a hand up, not a hand out.” Visit these booths and help support the Feria for another year.

Canine beauty

Caminando Juntos (Walking together) is the name of the next exhibition at Galeria Sol Mexicano. The show will open with a special reception on Friday, November 18, from 5 p.m. This two-week-only show will feature the photographs of Marco Ojeda, who is currently showing at the TSOHO gallery in Guadalajara.

“This exhibit is a documentary of the dogs I meet, work and share moments with, and of others I encounter where I go; and the wisdom they have passed on to me to share with you,” Ojeda says.  “This work not only shows how incredible and beautiful dogs are, it gives us a chance to look inside ourselves, invites us to reflect, respect ourselves and all the beings with whom we share this world.”

Jeffery Straker

pg18a

Straker has performed at Lake Chapala before, including a fundraiser for the youngsters  of the Centro Regional de Estudios Musicales (CREM).

Classically trained at the Trinity College of Music in London, England, Straker’s piano playing is superb. His beautiful melodies, inspired lyrics and distinctive voice with its surprising range and signature high notes, make a irresistible combination with his charismatic performance style and innate showmanship.

The Chicago Free Press has sung his praises: “Rufus Wainwright and K.D. Lang are among the Canadians making essential and beautiful music. Add Jeffery Straker to that list.”
