Northern Lights convert

The Janus String Quartet – Northern Lights Music Festival scholarship students – offers a concert at the home of Judy and Phil Parker, Friday, December 16, 7:30 p.m. in Vista Alegre, Ajijic.

Rock fest

Punto Cero Nueve Fest brings together rock, reggae, ska and hip-hop groups from lakeside and Guadalajara Saturday, December 17, noon to midnight at Chapala’s Coliseo Benito Juarez, at the north end of Avenida Madero next to the municipal soccer field. Pre-sale tickets are 50 pesos, with admission paid at the gate costing a few pesos more. 

Vivaldi concert

The Centro Regional de Estudios Musicales (CREM) children’s orchestra performs Vivaldi’s “Gloria” Saturday, December 17, 7 p.m. at the Auditorio de la Ribera. 

Several young musicians among the 12-piece orchestra will give solo performances, accompanied by the Victor Manuel Medeles Orchestra, which is composed of CREM staff and a few other professional musicians.

Festival Internacional de Mariachi del Lago

Four of the six members of Grupo Bello, who will perform along with Mariachi Estrellas de Chula Vista at the Lake Chapala Society’s second annual Festival Internacional de Mariachi del Lago on January 7. The two groups will give two performances from 1 to 3 p.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. Tickets, 200 pesos, are available at LCS.

Exhibitions

Lioberacion: an exhibit by Isidro Xilonochitl in formats of batik, painting, etchings and sketches opens Friday, December 16, 5 p.m. at Casa Luna, Ocampo 22, Ajijic. The works will remain up through January 27. Live music is by Kristina Trejo.

Pottery with pre-Colombian themes by artist Carlos Torres Chavez and Carlos Vazquez Mendoza will be on display at the Centro Cultural Antigua Presidencia in Chapala Saturday, December 17, 6 p.m. No charge.

“Color is Visible Soul” is the title of an exhibition of water media paintings by Lois Schroff opening Friday, December 30, 5-7 p.m. at the new cafe “Galleria La 133” located at Calle Independencia 133 beside the newly renovated plaza of San Antonio Tlayacapan. All are welcome to enjoy the botanas and sangria while perusing the paintings.

Art by Ted Shaw, Ana Romo and Jose Duran is up at the Centro Cultural Ajijic through January 7.

JPO bus trip

Viva la Musica sponsors a bus trip from Lakeside to the Degollado Theater in Guadalajara to see the Jalisco Ballet perform The Nutcracker (500 and 600 pesos), Sunday, December 18. Bus departs 10.30 a.m. Bus trip tickets are available by calling Rosemary Keeling, 766-1801.

Pastorela

Theater group Estrella de Tlaquepaque stages a pastorela (Christmas play) Sunday, December 18 at Gallery-Café Casa Luna, Ocampo 22, Ajijic. Tickets are on sale there for 50 pesos.

Folkloric dance

A free event at the Antigua Presidencia in Chapala is held Sunday, December 18, 5 p.m. when the Mexico City Ballet Folklorico de Nezahualcoyotl performs.

Holiday music

Pianist Galen performs his “Music for The Holidays” concert Tuesdays, December 20 and 27.  Wine and hors d’oeuvres will be served before the 90-minute show that also features some of the best musicians lakeside has to offer.  

Galen takes his audience on a journey of seasonal holiday music with unique arrangements.   These unforgettable candlelight concerts are intimate groups held in his home. Choral a cappella

Catch the last concert of the 17-voice Lake Chapala Chorale, featuring some of the best-loved Christmas music from the middle ages to the present day Friday, December 23, 7:30 p.m., at La Bodega restaurant (30 minutes of a cappella concert and 30 minutes of audience carol sing-along). 

The Naked Stage

“Lunch with Mrs. Baskin,” directed by Don Chaloner and featuring Russell Mack, Clay McAdam, MaryAnn Waite, Florette Schnelle, Phyllis Silverman and Dick Yanko, runs Friday, Saturday and Sunday, December 30, 31 and January 1, at the Naked Stage Readers Theatre.

Although she has no intention of buying anything, Mrs. Eva Baskin, a sweet, retired widow, continuously sets up appointments with sales people solely to have lunch and conversation with them in her home. Two young sales people –Terry, who not very successfully sells garage doors and Kira, who successfully sells solar panels and has just learned that her fiancé is cheating on her – accidentally meet in Mrs. Baskin’s apartment. Although neither have the slightest intention of getting involved in a relationship, Mrs. Baskin thinks otherwise.

The Naked Stage Theatre is at Hidalgo 261 in Riberas del Pilar. Box office opens 3:15 p.m., show begins 4 p.m. A cash bar with proceeds benefiting local animal shelters opens at 3 p.m.
