Ribera Arts Review - April 8, 2017

Galeria Sol Mexicano

An artists’ reception featuring Enrique Gordiano Avila, Paulina Careterro and Frank Howell opens Friday, April 7, 4-7 p.m. at Galeria Sol Mexicano. All three artists are regular exhibitors at the gallery and have some exciting new work for this show. 

Gordiano is known for his Mexican scenes often depicting everyday life in remote villages. Careterro uses various mediums to create still life and fantastical images, as well as a collection of “Frida” renditions. Howell is a master ceramicist who has a new collection of crystalline glazed work, a technique that uses specialty glazes showing visible and distinct crystal growth.

Romo and Shaw Act II

Artists Ana Romo, Ted Shaw and Juan Romo celebrate the grand opening of their private gallery at Santa Margarita 428 in Riberas del Pilar, Friday, April 7, 5-9 p.m. Drinks and appetizers are on the bill, along with interesting art and good conversation.

LLT Playhouse series

Through its affiliation with Broadway HD, Lakeside Little Theatre (LLT) will present the musical comedy “She Loves Me,” based on a play by Miklós László, Saturday, April 8, 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, April 9, 3 p.m.

“She Loves Me” is a heartwarming classic about finding love the old-fashioned way. 

The cast includes Laura Benanti, Zachary Levi, Gavin Creel, Byron Jennings, Michael McGrath, Jane Krakowski, Peter Bartlett and Nicholas Barasch.

Tickets are available at the LLT box office every Wednesday and Thursday 10 a.m. to noon, and one hour before each Mainstage and Playhouse show.

Ehécatl

Art Xik Xik and the Teatro CoyolliIzel present the world premier of Ehécatl, an original puppet theater production based on an Aztec legend, Saturday, April 22, 5-8 p.m. in a lovely, private chapel in upper Ajijic. The eclectic and creative presentation using original, pre-Hispanic style puppets, is a fundraiser for Butterflies en Mexico (BEM), an organization that promotes anti-violence education in Chapala public schools, community development in neighborhoods and vocational training projects. The upscale evening event includes valet parking, wine bar and catered appetizers. Tickets, 500 pesos (only 50 available), are available at Diane Pearl.

Lavender at La Mesa

Thirty-two of Marcia Lavender’s alcohol inks are hung at La Mesa Restaurant during April. A meet-the-artist opening will be held Saturday, April 8, 5-7 p.m. featuring half-price cocktails and some surprise salads from Greg Oches’ home-grown arugula. Lavender will do demonstrations of a new technique with ink on yupo paper with nothing but chemicals and ink – no brush work, on Wednesdays, April 12, 1 p.m. and April 19, 6:30 p.m.

Los Tecuexes will give a special performance along with Mariachi Barranqueño at the Centro Cultural Antigua Presidencia, Saturday, April 15, noon, as part of the Traditional Mexican Music Festival.

Traditional Music Fest

The Al Son de las Olas Traditional Mexican Music Festival hosted by the Chapala municipal government kicks off Sunday, April 9 and runs through Sunday, April 16. 

The festival starts with the inauguration of Expo-Venta, a sale of crafts, books and other items at the Centro Cultural Antigua Presidencia (old Chapala town hall) on Sunday, April 9, 3 p.m. The festivities begin at 6 p.m. with three presentations of traditional musical orchestras. From 8 p.m. Jalisco harp master William Faulkner will perform, followed by bands Tlacolol, Cuerdas de Pacho (from Colombia) and Los Jilgueros de Altamira.

Monday, April 10, the Ajijic Cultural Center will be the forum for Faulkner’s harp, Cuerdas de Pacho and the Orquesta Tipica de Autlan, starting 7 p.m.  Meanwhile, the Centro Cultural Antigua Presidencia in Chapala will host Los Jilgueros de Altamira, Orquesta Ranchera de Claro Franco and the Chapala Municipal Dance Company, 7:30 p.m.

Tuesday, April 11 sees a serenade by Antaño con Banda Tradicional de Chavo Luna and Banda Ranchera de Claro Franco starting 7 p.m. in Chapala’s main plaza. And over at the Ajijic Cultural Center, Los Jilgueros de Altamira, Agua de Todos los Rios and Jorge Morenos and his Son Cuexteco will perform at 7 p.m.

Wednesday, April 12, a fandango with Agua de Todos los Rios, Los Jilgueros de Altamira and Jorge Morenos and his Son Cuexteco will be held on the main plaza in San Antonio Tlayacapan, starting 7 p.m. 

At the Centro Cultural Antigua Presidencia, Banda de San Antonio and Banda Niños Heroes play 7 p.m., while on the plaza in San Nicolas de Ibarra William Faulkner and Orquesta Ranchera de Claro Franco will take the stage, 8 p.m.

Thursday, April 13, enjoy a night of folklore with various groups on the Chapala Malecon from 7 p.m.

Neil Diamond tribute

Dana gives a tribute to Neil Diamond in his new special effects show “Hang On To A Dream” at La Bodega, Sunday, April 9. Doors open 3:30 p.m. and the concert begins 4:30 p.m. No reservations, but limited seating. Drinks and botanas available.

Paintings by Gabriel Mariscal are up at La 133 Cafeteria and Galeria, Independencia 133, San Antonio Tlayacapan (in front of the plaza). Open Tuesday to Sunday, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Folkloric Ballet

The Ballet Folclorico Son de Mexico Internacional of San Juan Cosala is holding tryouts for the company, which focuses on regional Mexican dances, Monday, April 10, 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Casa Comunal in San Juan Cosala. Inscription is at 6 p.m., same venue. Interested dancers must be between 13 and 30 years of age, have some experience and be willing to train Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings. Recitals

A series of free recitals is scheduled each Thursday, 7 p.m. at the Centro Cultural Gonzalez Gallo (old train station) in Chapala.

Sydney Gay

A casual gourmet Easter lunch and concert will be held Friday and Saturday, April 14 and 15, 12:30 p.m. at the Huerto Cafe, located on the Carretera in Riberas del Pilar. Sydney Gay will sing the “Sweet Rhythms of Easter, Mexico, USA to Africa.” The menu includes organic salads, soup and sandwiches, babyback ribs and gourmet desserts. Live from the Met

Viva La Musica! sponsors Saturday bus trips to the Teatro Diana in Guadalajara to view high-definition telecasts of Live from the Met productions. Opera screenings are April 22, “Eugene Onegin” by Tchaikovsky; and May 13, “Der Rosencavalier” by R. Strauss.

Bus tickets, 400 pesos (500 for non-Viva members), are available at LCS on Thursdays and Fridays, 10 a.m. to noon.

Naked Stage

“Four Places” by Joel Drake Johnson is the next production of The Naked Stage Readers’ Theatre, locate in Riberas del Pilar.

When Peggy’s two adult children take her out for lunch, they quietly begin to take apart her life. With excruciating patience, the playwright lets two middle-aged siblings and their elderly mother lead one another – with the best intentions – to a place where forgiveness, understanding, and even love may no longer be possible. 

The play is directed by Pierre Blackburn and cast members are Pam Pettis, Chris L’Ecluse, Deanne Barber and Clay McAdam. Performances are scheduled Friday, Saturday and Sunday, April 28, 29 and 30. Box office opens at 3 p.m., performance at 4 p.m.
