Juan Rulfo
An exhibition of a private collection of books in various languages by the famed Jalisco author Juan Rulfo, as well as postcards, movie posters and more will be held at Casa Luna, beginning Saturday, May 13, 6 p.m.
A history of the author’s life and works will be presented, as well as readings of a fragment of his book “Un Pedazo de Noche,” before the showing of the short film of the same name, a 2008 production by Roberto Rochin. The exhibit will be shown through June 10. Casa Luna is located at Ocampo 22 in Ajijic.
Piano Recitals
A series of free piano recitals organized by the University of Guadalajara is scheduled the following Thursdays, 7 p.m. at the Centro Cultural Gonzalez Gallo (old train station) in Chapala:
May 18: Susana Bueno Gomez will play music by Bach, Mozart, Chopin, Hernandez Moncada, Ruiz Armengol and Ruiz Galindo.
May 25: Stefania Morales Ponce de Leon, a student at the University of Guadalajara, will interpret a program of pieces by Muzio Clementi, Miguel Bernal Jimenez, Isaac Albeniz and George Gershwin. Friday, May 26, 7 p.m., pianist Antonio Quiroz Martinez, a graduate of the University, will interpret works by Mozart, Chopin, Debussy and Mexican composer Armando Montiel Olvera.
Saturday, May 27, 6 p.m., a concert is given by the Guitarreto Ensamble, which includes David Navarro Luna, Roy Joel Perez Sahagun, Marco Helio Mondaragon Alvarez and Edgar Guadalupe Romo Garcia. Cover is 100 pesos.
Met Opera bus trip
Viva la Musica!’s final bus trip of the season to screenings of Live From the Met at the Teatro Diana in Guadalajara is on Saturday, May 13.
“Der Rosenkavalier,” by Richard Strauss and starring Renee Fleming and Elina Garenca, will be presented in a new production. The bus departs 10:30 a.m. on the Carretera, near Farmacias Guadalajara.
Met Opera bus trip tickets, 450 pesos (550 for non-Viva members), must be purchased at least one week in advance. They are available at the LCS ticket booth on Thursdays and Fridays, 10 a.m. to noon.
Sculpture exhibition
Rigoberto Navarro, Betto Rock and invited artists are presenting sculptures in stone, metal, wood, clay and recycled material made by local artists Friday, May 13, 5 p.m. at Casa Luna, Ocampo 22 Ajijic.
Free concerts in Ajijic
Four musical artists will give free concerts at the Centro Laguna Mall in Ajijic, Saturday, May 20: Violoncheloops, a mix of cello and ambient-experimental music, kicks off the fun at 5 p.m.; Soft Pillow, Mexican guitar pop, takes over at 5:30 p.m.; J.C. Taylor sings and plays the guitar at 6 p.m. and Hector Santiago plays rock on various instruments at 6:30 p.m.
Naked Stage
The Naked Stage Readers Theatre presents “Chapatti,” Friday to Sunday, May 26, 27 and 28 at the theater located at Hidalgo 261 in Riberas del Pilar.
A look at loneliness and our universal need for companionship, whether in the form of pets or other people. The play speaks to feelings we all have at times, but especially to the isolation often felt by older men and women. “Chapatti” is a poignant and tender story about two people who learn how to love. Viva event
A recital by Saúl Ibarra Ramos, the local 16-year old wunderkind piano student, will occur Friday, May 26, 7 p.m. in a private home, to raise funds so he can attend the International Tchaikovski Competition in Astana, Kazakhstan. Tickets, 300 pesos, must be purchased beforehand from Notario No. 2, Parque Oriente 60, near the Modelo store, in lower Chula Vista.
Musical gathering
The Chapala Municipal Cultural Department invites one and all to a Tertulia Musical, where you can enjoy both Mexican and European music in a bohemian atmosphere. The event at the Centro Cultural Antigua Presidencia is on Friday, June 2, 8 p.m. Tickets, 50 pesos, are available at the venue on the day of the presentation.
Recital
Rosa Maria Valdez plays a Viva La Musica! concert with Manual Olivares, Thursday, June 22. The venue is yet to be decided.
