"Chivito al Precipicio"
Isidro Xilonzóchitl (Xilotl) from San Juan Cosalá at the June 10 opening of his exhibit of paintings and sculptures at Chapala’s Centro Cultural Antigua Presidencia. The showing at the ground floor gallery continues through July 15. The title “Chivito al Precipicio” (little goat on the precipice), is taken from a slang term for a certain sexual position, reflecting the erotic themes of some of the artist’s works.
Vintage Photos
Some 30 large format vintage photos of Chapala will be on diplay as of Friday, June 16, 7:15 p.m. at a cocktail opening for the exhibit in the new Gallery Annex of the Municipal Historical Archives, located adjacent to the offices main entrance between the Simapa water office and Bancomer.
Art exhibit
“La Sangre Sepia,” an exhibit of abstract paintings by Guadalajara artist Jesus Gallardo, will be inaugurated with a cocktail and some bocadillos, Saturday, June 17, 5 p.m. at the Centro Cultural Ajijic.
Local Artist
This mural, on display in the office of the Registro Civico de Ajijic, is the work of local artist Antonio Lopez Vega.
Viva Bus trips
Viva La Musica sponors bus trips to concerts by the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra (JPO) at the Teatro Degollado.
Sunday, June 18, Marco Parisotto will conduct the JPO in a performance of Claude Debussy’s La Mer, with soloist Anton Dubatovka on flute. The program also includes Arnold Bax’s “Tintagel Symphonic Poem,” Sergei Prokofiev’s Concerto for Flute and Orchestra in D Major, and Félix Mendelssohn’s “Hebrides Overture.” The bus departs at 10:30 a.m.
Sunday, June 25, the JPO will perform Mozart’s Symphony No. 31 “Paris”, Symphony No. 36 “Linz” and Symphony No. 38 “Prague,” under the baton of Marco Parisotto. The bus departs at 10:30 a.m.
Sunday, July 2, guest conductor Sacha Goetzel presents “1001 Arabian Nights,” with soloist Philipee Quint on violin. The program includes Tchaikovsky’s “Eugene Onegin,” Barber’s “Concerto for Violin and Orchestra” and Rimski-Korsakov’s “Scheherazade.” The bus departs at 10:30 a.m.

LCS film aficionados
English-language films are shown Thursdays at 2 p.m. to Lake Chapala Society members (bring your card). On June 22, the featured film is “Marmoulak, The Lizard” (2004, Iran). A recently jailed petty thief disguises himself as a Mullah and succeeds in escaping, but has to remain in the Mullah role longer than he expects to.
"Other People's Money"
The cast of The Naked Stage production of “Other People’s Money,” (L-R) Director Patricia Guy, Meredith Miller, Susan Quiriconi, Johan Dirkes, Don Beaudreault and Chris L’Ecluse are all set for their debut Friday-Sunday, June 23-25. Written by Alvin Sargent, the play focuses on a Wall Street raider who threatens a “mom and pop” company with a hostile take-over. The patriarch of the company is faced with the task of protecting his company, his family and his employees while maintaining his integrity. He gets help from his daughter, a lawyer, who enjoys the thrust and parry of a legal battle with the raider, who tries to win her heart as well as her company. The play asks the question: Are corporate raiders monsters of capitalism or realists? The curtain goes up every day at 4 p.m. at The Naked Stage Theatre, Hidalgo 261, in Riberas del Pilar. Entrance is 100 pesos.
Summer Concerts
A talented duo, violist Manuel Olivares and pianist Rosa Maria Valdez will give Viva la Musica’s first performance of its Summer in the Village Concert series, called “Summer Dreams” in the intimate setting of a lovely Ajijic lakefront home.
The artists will perform a varied program of works for the viola and piano which show off the viola’s dark, mellow tones to perfection. They start with the Glazounow Elegie, which is a hauntingly beautiful piece reminiscent of a song without words sung with deeply yearning rich tones. The Moncayo Sonata, which is a Mexican work, written in 1934, is lively and enchanting.
A champagne intermission at a no-host bar in the garden will be followed by Schumann’s Marchenbilder or music from fairy tales. Music by Mexican composer Barbosa precees the program’s finale, a tango by Eugeno Toussaint, another Mexican composer.

Tickets to all three concerts in Viva’s summer program are also available for 800 pesos. The two later concerts are a piano solo concert with Sergio Parra in St. Andrew’s Anglican Church July 27and d Art Songs and Arias with soprano Michele Bogdanowicz and tenor Ernesto Ramirez in the Auditorium in la Floresta August 24.
Ballet Folclorico
The Ballet Folclorico of the Chapala Municipal Government under the direction of Zayda Zamudio will perform at the Auditorio de la Ribera, Sunday, June 25, noon. The cost is 100 pesos.
Dance
The Anferes Dance Troupe will perform Sunday, June 25, 5 p.m. at Huerto Café, Hidalgo 212 in Ribera del Pilar. The performance is a celebration of the Cafe’s third anniversary and a fundraiser for local dance student Paola Mellion, winner of a six-month dance scholarship to study choreography and interpretive dance technique at the Conservatorio Superior de Danza del Instituto del Teatro in Barcelona, Spain this summer. The event includes a set by local jazz band Latinitos Lounge at 5 p.m., three special dinner choices at 6 p.m. and the dance performance, which will include folkloric, fandango and contemporary/modern selections.
Anfares Dance Troupe is made up of dance students from the bachelor’s degree program of dance at the University of Colima.
Tickets, 500 pesos per person, include dinner and the performance and are available at Huerto Café.
Fabrica de Arte de Chapala
Fábrica De Arte De Chapala presents the exhibit “Vertebras del Desierto”, by Columbian painter Rafael Ordoñez Francisco Perez. The venue is next to Banamex in Chapala.
Ukulele Singalong
The annual Ukulele Summer Singalong will be held Monday, June 26, 5 p.m. at Maria Isabel restaurant. This year, the theme is “Once Upon a Song”, which will see the group performing childhood favorites. Some are nursery songs, some are campfire songs, some are popular songs of the day. Of course, everyone in the group had different childhoods — spanning at least three decades and many countries — so expect something for everyone to enjoy and sing along.
Maria Isabel is donating the space, so we hope the attendees will recognize this generosity by ordering drinks or food while they are there. Alcohol is not required, but it does tend to make one’s singing sound a little sweeter.
There is no admission fee, but the audience will be offered the opportunity to donate for the ongoing expenses of the Academia de Ukuleles de la Ribera, which now serves around 40 local children ages 7 to 18. CUL provides the instruments, music and pays the professional instructor who travels from Guadalajara to teach the kids each Tuesday and Saturday.
During the event, audience members will have access to ukes; with the help of CUL members they’re invited to try playing along, should they be interested in doing so.
Club Ukulele de Laguna members also continue learning in a series of opportunities that range from free instructions for beginners and intermediate players to occasional workshops with well-known professional ukulele circuit instructors and performers. Beginners are always welcome. In addition to the free beginner classes, CUL has rental ukuleles available for the first month.
LLT Actor’s Studio
The Lakeside Little Theatre announces The Shakespeare Project, an actor’s studio series as part of its Playhouse events. Led by David Goldman, the three-day series (Monday, June 26, Friday, June 30 and Monday, July 3) will include bawdy comedies, sweeping historical dramas and riveting tragedies. This project is for novice and experienced actors alike, as the prospect of performing Shakespeare can be intimidating. Join in as the group demystifies the great Bard and his works and explores methods and techniques that will help actors unleash their inner thespian.
Topics include: an overview of English renaissance theatre; Shakespeare: the man and his works; vocalization and the language of Shakespeare; scene study and basic acting techniques in Shakespeare’s plays, and the Shakespearean soliloquy.

Bravo Theatre
“Song, Dance, Improv, Comedy — My Favorite Things” is a variety show extravaganza being performed by local and Guadalajara artists at The Bravo! Theatre in July. Performers range in age from kids to seniors. There will be something for everyone to enjoy. Timothy G. Ruff Welch accompanies the singers and there will be tap and Latin dance and improvisation with audience involvement.
The shows are Saturdays and Sundays, July 1, 2, 8, and 9. Saturday shows are at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday performances at 4 p.m. with a cash bar one hour before each show.
