Exhibit
Viva La Flaca, an exhibit of paintings and cartoons, opens Sunday, October 22, 1-3 p.m. at Cafe-Gallery 133 on the Plaza in San Antonio.
Art by Enrique Loza, Adi Rivera, Alejandro Camacho, Octavio Ignacio Perez, Victor Peralta, Jose Luis Ramirez and Luz Cuellar can be viewed through November 15.
Showstoppers
Los Cantantes del Lago’s Showstoppers 15 concert ison Sunday, October 22, 4 p.m. (cash bar at 3 p.m.) at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church in Riberas del Pilar.
This concert features members and friends of Los Cantantes performing solos, duets and small group numbers of Broadway and non-Broadway “showstoppers” with a bit of comedy, some drama and a lot of fun. The show features new and returning singers in all new songs. Emcee Barbara Pruitt will be on hand and Maestro Timothy G. Ruff Welch will accompany the singers.

Naked Stage
Director Liz White brings “My Old Lady” to the Naked Stage Reader’s Theatre, Friday to Sunday, October 27-29, 4 p.m.
The play by famed playwright Israel Horovitz focuses on Mathias, a nearing-60, down-on-his-luck New Yorker, who thinks his fortunes could be changing when, after the death of his estranged father, he learns he has inherited a vast Paris apartment that could be sold for a handsome sum. But, of course, there’s a catch: his apartment is already inhabited by Mathilde, a refined and feisty 90-something retiree, and Chloé, her beautiful but tart-tongued daughter ... and they have no intention of leaving! Complications arise, confrontations occur, skeletons fall out of the closet – and, since this is, after all, a story set in France, a considerable amount of wine is imbibed. Diana Rowland, Peggy Lord Chilton and Harry McFadden bring this affecting and amusing play to life.
Film aficionados
The Lake Chapala Society (LCS) hosts a weekly film for members at the Sala, Thursdays 2 p.m.
October 26, “The President” (2014), will be featured. A brutal dictator comes face-to-face with the injustices committed by his regime when his country is taken over by revolutionaries. Filmed in and around Tblisi, Georgia. Discussion to follow.
Classical Guitar
Alfredo Sanchez performs a program of works by Domenico Scarlatti, S.L. Weiss, Handel, Bach, Isaac Albéniz, Mauro Giuliani, John Williams, Piazzolla and Carlo Domeniconi Thursday, October 26, 7 p.m. at the Centro Cultural Gonzalez Gallo in Chapala. There is free entrance to this concert sponsored the University of Guadalajara as part of its third International Guitar Festival.
Orchestra bus trips
Viva La Musica is sponsoring bus trips to Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra concerts at the Teatro Degollado in Guadalajara. Tickets (premium orchestra seats), 450 pesos (550 for non-members), are available at the LCS ticket booth on Thursdays and Fridays, 10 a.m. to noon, or by calling Rosemary Keeling at 766-1801.
Thursday, October 26: Saint-Saens’ “Organ Symphony No. 3,” conducted by Marco Parisotto. The bus leaves at 4:30 p.m. with a stop at a good restaurant.
Sunday November 19: Gustav Mahler, “Resurrection Symphony,” conducted by Marco Parisotto, with soprano Nicole Heaston, contralto Cassandra Zoe Velasco, and the Zapopan Municipal Choir directed by Timothy Ruff Welch. The bus leaves at 3:30 p.m. for the 6 p.m. concert. No dinner stop.
Sunday November 26: Operatic Gala directed by Marco Parisotto features pieces from Mozart’s Don Giovanni, Bellini’s Norma, Puccini’s La Boheme and Turandot. Nicole Heaston, soprano, and Lorenzo Decaro, tenor, perform. Bus departs 10:30 am.
Photos and paintings
Galeria del Arte Sol Mexicano will hold an artists’ reception for photographer Ruben Varela and painter Jose Luis Ramirez Saturday, October 28, 4-7 p.m. Sol Mexicano is located at Colon 13 in Ajijic.
Instrumental concert
The Bachue Trio Instrumental from Colombia will give a concert Sunday, October 29, 5:30 p.m. at the Centro Cultural Ajijic (CCA). Alexandra Hoyos plays the bandola, Eliana Fernandez strums the tiple and Jennifer Rodriguez plays the guitar. Special guests include Areli Medeles and Ernesto Pacheco. Tickets, 150 pesos, are available at Diane Pearl, Dental del Lago and the CCA.

“Time Stands Still,” Lakeside Little Theatre’s next production, is a poignant contemporary drama written by Pulitzer-prize winning playwright Donald Margulies about the changing relationship between a photo journalist and her war correspondent boyfriend.
The play revolves around Sarah, who has returned from covering the Iraq war after being injured by a roadside bomb, and her boyfriend James who is swamped by guilt after leaving Sarah alone in Iraq. Their friend Richard, a photo editor, introduces them to his new, much younger girlfriend Mandy. The play focuses on their relationships and Sarah and James’ prospects for a more conventional life.
Directed by David Goldman and featuring Don Beaudreault, Johanna Labadie, Greg Custer and Carolyn Cothran, “Time Stands Still” runs November 3-12 at Lakeside Little Theatre. Evenings, the curtain rises at 7:30 p.m. and the first Saturday and both Sunday matinees begin 3 p.m.

Singers wanted
The Lake Chapala Chorale picks up their Christmas concert rehearsals for “I’ll Be Home for Christmas,” to be presented December 15, 16 and 17. Under Cindy Paul’s direction, the Chorale is becoming known as the people’s choir of Lakeside. Auditions for all voices will be held 2:30-3 p.m. every Friday through November 3, at the Little Chapel by the Lake on the highway across from Tio Corp.

Director Paul Kloegman is looking for three women for the Lakeside Little Theatre production of “Agnes of God” to be staged January 12-21, 2018. Auditions are Friday and Saturday, November 10 and 11, 9:30 a.m. at the theater.

Viva La Musica hosts Saturday trips to HD live screenings of Live from the Met opera at the Teatro Diana in Guadalajara. Buses depart at 10:30 a.m.

November 18: “The Exterminating Angel” by British composer Thomas Ades, based on a famous surrealist movie, with Audrey Luna as Leticia Maynar and Amanda Echalaz as Lucia de Nobile.
Bravo Theatre
“Trying,” by Canadian playwright Joanna Glass is the next production of Bravo Theatre.
Directed by Bernadette Jones, with Roger Larson and Allison Plamondon, “Trying” is based on Glass’s experience during 1967-1968 when she worked for Francis Biddle at his home in Washington, D.C. Judge Biddle had been Attorney General of the United States under Franklin Roosevelt. After the war, President Truman named him Chief Judge of the American Military Tribunal at Nuremberg. The play is about a young Canadian girl and an old Philadelphia aristocrat, “trying” to understand each other in what Biddle knows is the final year of his life.
“‘Trying’ is a portrait of generational reconciliation. It is enormously bracing theater,” said the New York Daily News.
