Naked Stage
Lila Wells directs the next production by the Naked Stage Readers Theater, “A Doll’s House, Part 2.”
“A Doll’s House, Part 2” was nominated for eight Tony Awards in 2017, and Laurie Metcalf (best known as Roseanne’s sister Jackie in the sitcom) won Best Actress for her performance as the infamous Nora.
Henrik Ibsen wrote “A Doll’s House” in 1879. Playwright Lucas Hnath has set the scene for his sequel 15 years after Nora left her husband and children, in the famous door-slamming final scene. But it’s not necessary to have read or seen Ibsen to enjoy this production.
In “Part 2” Nora has returned, but Hnath has propelled her, through contemporary language and characterization, into the 21st Century, condensing the original and the sequel into a complex and thought-provoking story.
The production stars Fred Koesling, Kathleen Pharis, Sharon Lowry and Jennifer Wisniewski. Performance dates are Friday, Saturday and Sunday, June 29 and 30 and July 1. Orchestra/choral concert
The orchestra and chorus of the Centro Regional de Estudios de Musicales (CREM), under the direction of Emmanuel Medeles, will present a summer concert at the Auditorio de la Ribera, Saturday, June 30, 7:30 p.m. The orchestra will begin with Vivaldi’s Concerto For Two Violoncellos and Orchestra and then interpret works by Arturo Marquez, Victor Manuel Medeles, Agustin Lara, Manuel M. Ponce and Astor Piazzolla in the first section of the program. After intermission, the chorus will perform songs from Mexico, Venezuela, Puerto Rico and Brazil, among others. Tickets, 200 pesos, are available at the Auditorio, Dental del Lago and Diane Pearl.
French songs
Les Femmes de Serge perform songs in French, Saturday, June 30, 6 p.m. at the Centro Cultural Ajijic. Tickets are 100 pesos in advance and 120 pesos at the door.
JPO bus trips
Viva la Musica offers summer trips to Guadalajara’s Teatro Degollado to hear the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra.
Thursday, July 5, the JPO will offer up Mozart’s Concerto for Three Pianos, Liszt’s Symphonic Poem and Beethoven’s bombastic “Wellington’s Victory.” The group will stop for dinner in the restaurant district of Guadalajara. Bus departs at 4:30 p.m. and the performance is at 8:30 p.m.
Sunday, July 15, the JPO presents Brahms’ Violin Concerto, with virtuoso Korean-American Esther Yoo, and Bartok’s Concerto for Orchestra, with Marco Parisotto conducting. Bus departs at 10:30 a.m. for the 12:30 p.m. performance.

Film Aficionados
Lake Chapala Society members can take advantage of Film Aficionados screenings each Thursday at 2 p.m. July 5, “The Passion of Anna” (1969, Sweden) will be shown. This is a film from nearly 50 years ago by the great Swedish director Ingmar Bergman. A recently divorced man meets an emotionally devastated widow and they begin a love affair (100 minutes).
Bravo! Theatre
“Visiting Mr. Green” is a funny, emotional and compelling story about what tears us apart and what brings us back together.
This production at Bravo Theatre is directed by Jayme Littlejohn and stars Roger Larson, last seen in “Trying” at Bravo, and Ken Yakiwchuk, last seen in “Quality of Life” at Naked Stage. They have brought this show to life twice before and this time the performance is in loving memory of Roger’s partner Phil Shepherd, as a benefit to help defray medical expenses.
The show got a rave review comparing it to an off-Broadway production and audiences have clamored for a reprise run.

Jazz at CCA
The Snow Trio returns to Ajijic – with guest Gilberto Riòs on the double bass – to give a concert in the Centro Cultural Ajijic Saturday, July 7, 6-8 p.m. It will be a night full of improvisation featuring golden jazz standards to pieces by contemporary composers. The Snow Trio is comprised of Sofia Ramirez on piano, Darko Palacios Cardenas on drums and vocalist Kary Garnica.
LLT wants actors
Auditions for Lakeside Little Theatre’s next production, “Clever Little Lies,” are Friday, July 6 and Saturday, July 7. Show dates are September 14 and 23. Interested backstage volunteers are also welcome to attend to get a grasp of the play’s content, needs and requirements. You may ask the director questions after the reading.
Piano concert
Efrain Daniel Ulloa and Everado Rojas Silva will give a piano concert presenting works by Chopin, Beethoven, Mozart and Debussy, at the Centro Cultural Gonzalez Gallo in Chapala, Friday, July 13, 8 p.m. Entrance is 100 pesos.
Viva summer concerts
This summer, Viva La Musica is sponsoring a concert series titled “Romance in the Village,” featuring chamber music concerts held in private homes and small concert halls at lakeside.
Friday, July 20, the Galatea Early Music Ensemble presents “Renaissance Romance,” a musical journey through France, Italy, Germany and England using ancient instruments popular during the Renaissance period, including lutes, baroque violins, guitars and a viola de gamba. The ensamble is accompanied by a talented soprano soloist and guest baritone. This concert will take place in a private home in Rancho del Oro.
The “Opera Romance” gala on Thursday, August 30 features soprano Jessica Alcala, mezzosoprano Mayela Lou and baritone Jose Manuel Gonzalez, with piano accompanist Rodrigo Sierra Moncayo. Romantic music by Donizetti, Rossini, Wagner and Lehar will be performed.
And on Friday, September 21, Sergio Parra, a scholarship student of Viva’s for many years, will play a program of Chopin, Messiaen, Iberia and beautiful Debussy preludes in St. Andrew’s Anglican Church in Riberas del Pilar.
Tickets cost 500 pesos and include champagne and canapés served at 3:30 p.m. before the 4 p.m. concerts.
