Classical guitar
Luis Angel Medina gives a guitar recital at the Centro Cultural Gonzalez Gallo, Friday, August 31, 7 p.m. He will play classical pieces by some of the great guitar masters, including L. Brouwer, Sainz de la Maza, Sor, Piazzolla and Castelnuovo-Tedesco. Entrance is 100 pesos.
LLT kick-off
Lakeside Little Theatre (LLT) is planning a live auction at their annual members’ kick-off party Saturday, September 1. The auction is to raise funds for the upcoming five-million-peso planned renovation. Season tickets are now on sale at the box office.
ASA meets
The Ajijic Society of the Arts (ASA) meets Monday, September 3, 10 a.m. at La Bodega Ajijic. Roger Erickson, a new ASA member, will talk about his work in stained glass from 10:30 a.m.
Erickson and his wife Marge have been creating custom-stained glass art since 1991. In Iceland they taught 200 students. Over the next 27 years they continued their passion as a team, with Marge mostly doing design and Rodger the construction. They have bought a home in Ajijic and are considering moving here full time.
Singers wanted
Los Cantantes del Lago director Timothy G. Ruff Welch is looking for singers for this coming concert season who want to work hard and enjoy themselves through music. Rehearsals are Tuesdays and Thursdays, 3-5:30 p.m.

Film Aficionados
Lake Chapala Society members can take advantage of Film Aficionados screenings each Thursday, 2 p.m. On September 6, “Mostly Martha” (2001, Germany) will be shown. In a German restaurant, chef Martha is the undisputed supreme ruler, and woe to any customer who would dare criticize her cooking. The pressures of her private life and work combine to force her to call her attitudes and life choices into question (103 minutes).
LLT morns

He was 81 years old. Carroll was the theater’s longest serving president (2002-2013). He directed three plays and starred in many others. George Rauch exhibit
The works of long-time lakeside resident Georg Rauch (1924-2006) will be up at the Jocotepec Casa de Cultura, Hidalgo Sur 38, September 8-28.
Born in Salzburg, and one-quarter Jewish, Rauch was nonetheless drafted into Hitler’s army and sent to the Russian trenches. He was captured in Romania and spent many months as a Russian POW in Kiev. His mother nursed him back to health when he returned home weighing only 80 pounds.
But only a year later Georg would spend two years in a body cast at an Alpine Sanatorium with bone tuberculosis, contracted in the Russian POW camp. He spent hundreds of hours drawing his fellow patients as they lay in the healing sun, and would later say, “This was my best art school!”
He began painting seriously in Vienna in 1949. Strongly influenced by the Viennese artists, Egon Schiele and Gustav Klimt, he held his first one-man show in 1952 at the Wiener Konzerthaus, also becoming a member of the prestigious “Wiener Secession.” Rauch later exhibited widely: Paris, London, Duesseldorf, Munich, New York, Toronto, Los Angeles, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico City and most of the capital cities of Mexico.
He settled in Jocotepec with his wife Phyllis in 1976, where he lived until his death in 2006.
LLT season opener
Collette Clavadetscher directs Lakeside Little Theatre’s 2018-2019 season opener, “Clever Little Lies,” by Joe DiPietro.
Billed as a comedy of sex, love and secrets, both shattering and hilarious, “Clever Little Lies” is a laugh-filled story of long-term love and marriage, for better … and for worse. When Alice notices her beloved husband, Bill, has returned home on edge after a tennis match with their son, she grows suspicious and springs into action. Determined to piece together the puzzle, she invites her son and daughter-in-law for drinks and dessert. Sidesplitting chaos ensues as Alice digs for the truth, resulting in even more honesty than anyone expected.
The cast is Barbara Pruitt, Zane Pumiglia, Donny Bryant and M.A. Bruneau. Show dates are September 14-23.

Dinner-Murder Mystery
A Dinner-Murder Mystery theater event will be held at Bobby’s La Terraza Restaurant Sunday, September 16, and Monday, September 17, from 6-9 p.m. The restaurant’s fictional owner Pepi Roni has been murdered. A gathering of the family and friends over a traditional Italian meal takes place, where the patrons will try to figure out who murdered Pepi.

Piano concert
Friday, September 21, Sergio Parra, a scholarship student of Viva La Musica’s for many years, will play a program of Chopin, Messiaen, Iberia and beautiful Debussy preludes in St. Andrew’s Anglican Church in Riberas del Pilar as part of Viva’s summer concert series, Romance in the Village.
The show will commence with a champagne and canape reception in the garden at 3:30 p.m. Tickets, 400 pesos, are available from Diane Pearl, Mia’s Boutique and the Lake Chapala Society on Thursday and Friday 10 a.m. to noon.
Big Band is back

Super arts event
Poets, writers, dancers, musicians, singers, painters, sculptors and other artistic types are asked to participate in lakeside’s contribution to the “100 Thousand Poets/Artists for Change” event Saturday, September 29.
Two locations are open for free performances from 4-8 p.m. They are the studio of Pat Apt at Ramon Carona 5-B in Ajijic, and the studio of Miguel Nuñez (Casa Michin), at the corner of San Diego and Los Angeles in Riberas del Pilar.
“If you want to see the world change for the better, it will take the efforts of those dedicated to cultural activities to organize around subjects such as peace, sustainability, justice, equality, freedom, love and tolerance,” says local artist and event promotor Lois Schroff.
This event began in 2011 and is now held worldwide.

Fall Viva bus trips
Viva plans three “Live at the Met” bus trips to see opera on the big screen at Teatro Diana Saturdays in Guadalajara. October 13: “Aida” by Verdi; November 3: “Samson and Delilah” by Saint Saens; and December 15: “La Traviata” (The Fallen Woman) by Verdi.

September 23: “Carmen” and “Bolero” with the Ballet de Jalisco; October 7: Piazolla’s “Four Seasons” (JPO); October 14: Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 1 (JPO); October 25: Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 2 (JPO); November 4: Mahler’s Symphony No. 7 (JPO); November 27: Live opera “Turandot” by Puccini, featuring Oksana Kramereva, Riccardo Massi and the Zapopan Municipal Chior and JPO; December 9: JPO puts on a Baroque Fest with music by Vivaldi, Geminiani, Gabrieli, Bach and Lully; December 13: Ballet de Jalisco performs the “Nutcracker.”
