LLT season opener
Collette Clavadetscher directs Lakeside Little Theatre’s 2018-2019 season opener, “Clever Little Lies,” by Joe DiPietro, Friday, September 14, through Sunday, September 23.
Billed as a comedy of sex, love and secrets, both shattering and hilarious, “Clever Little Lies” is a laugh-filled story of long-term love and marriage, for better … and for worse. When Alice notices her beloved husband, Bill, has returned home on edge after a tennis match with their son, she grows suspicious and springs into action. Determined to piece together the puzzle, she invites her son and daughter-in-law for drinks and dessert. Sidesplitting chaos ensues as Alice digs for the truth, resulting in even more honesty than anyone expected.
The cast is Barbara Pruitt, Zane Pumiglia, Donny Bryant and M.A. Bruneau.

Mariachi gala
A mariachi gala featuring Mariachi Real Axixic and other performers will get the town in a festive mood Friday, September 14, 7 p.m. at the Centro Cultural Ajijic. This show is part of the Fiestas Patrias Ajijic celebrations. Tickets are 120 pesos (100 pesos in advance) at the center.
Dinner-Murder Mystery
A Dinner-Murder Mystery theater event will be held at Bobby’s La Terraza Restaurant Sunday, September 16, and Monday, September 17, from 6-9 p.m. The restaurant’s fictional owner Pepi Roni has been murdered. A gathering of the family and friends over a traditional Italian meal takes place, where the patrons will try to figure out who murdered Pepi.
Cast members are Clay McAdam, Jon Deyoung, Deanne Barber, Donna Blackburn, Pam Pettus and Pierre Blackburn.
Dinner will be a Italian specialty of the Tuscan region. Tickets, 300 pesos, are on sale at Diane Pearl and La Terraza.
Film Aficionados
Lake Chapala Society members can take advantage of Film Aficionados screenings each Thursday, 2 p.m. On September 20, “The Nightingale (Ye Ying)” (2013, China) is a story of an elderly man and his granddaughter who walk together through much of China with a bird in a cage (97 minutes).
LLT auditions
Lakeside Little Theatre (LLT) holds auditions for “Noises Off” by Michael Frayn, Friday and Saturday, September 21 and 22, with registration at 9:30 a.m. and auditions at 10 a.m. at the theater.
The play is directed by Dave McIntosh, with assistance, coaching and guidance by Ann Swiston. They are looking for five men and four women.
Life in the theater meets Murphy’s Law. “Noises Off” is an ingenious farce about the challenges of staging a farce – a fiendishly ingenious homage to the form. This is a play within a play in three acts, with only one intermission, each act ostensibly showing the first act of a typical British sex farce called “Nothing On,” being performed by a decidedly down-at-heel traveling theatrical company in three provincial British towns.

Viva recital
Friday, September 21, Viva presents concert pianist Sergio Parra, one of their scholarship winners, in the last of their laid back summer series of concerts, “Romance in the Village.” Parra studied at the University of Guadalajara and obtained grants to compose “Eight Impressions of Holy Week Wixarika” for chamber orchestra in 2014 and to write a clarinet concerto in 2018. At the moment he is studying piano performance with Blandine Tricot in Guadalajara, as well as composing.
The recital will include a 3:30 p.m. champagne reception in the garden of St. Andrew’s church in Riberas del Pilar. The concert starts promptly at 4 p.m. with a series of romantic piano pieces, including Debussy and Chopin.

Painting Guild
The first exhibition of the season for the Lake Chapala Painting Guild will kick off with a Mexico theme at the Studio of Pat Apt, Ramon Corona 5B, Friday, September 21, 5-7 p.m. Come and enjoy the paintings and refreshments. The paintings, which will be for sale, will remain in place for three weeks.
Spotlight Club
The Ol’ Country Boys break out the steel guitar Friday, September 21, 8 p.m., at The Spotlight Club in San Antonio. The cover is 80 pesos.
Big Band Raphael Terriquez takes over on Saturday, September 22, 7 p.m. Enjoy tunes from the past and present performed by 18 of the finest musicians and vocalists at lakeside. Help Mac
Popular lakeside crooner Mac Morrison recently had open-heart surgery. A Go-Fund-Me page has been opened to help with his hospital bill. Mac has given his time and talent to many charitable foundations, groups and people over the years and now needs lakeside to help him out. A CD with some of his favorite songs is being produced and, in addition, talented performers are creating a variety show with music, dance, comedy and more. All proceeds will go toward the “Miracle Mac” Fund.

Super arts event
Poets, writers, dancers, musicians, singers, painters, sculptors and other artistic types are asked to participate in lakeside’s contribution to the “100 Thousand Poets/Artists for Change” event Saturday, September 29.
Two locations are open for free performances from 4-8 p.m. They are the studio of Pat Apt at Ramon Carona 5-B in Ajijic and the studio of Miguel Nuñez (Casa Michin), at the corner of San Diego and Los Angeles in Riberas del Pilar.

Calendar party
Enrique and Belva Velazquez invite the public to the 26th annual opening of their “Our Beloved Mexico” calendar Friday and Saturday, October 5 and 6, 4-8 p.m. at their gallery at 16 de Septiembre 7 in Ajijic.
The original paintings used in the calendar will be on display and for sale and calendars will be signed by the artists.

Fall Viva bus trips
Viva plans three “Live at the Met” bus trips to see opera on the big screen at the Teatro Diana Saturdays in Guadalajara.
October 13: “Aida” by Verdi; November 3: “Samson and Delilah” by Saint Saens; and December 15: “La Traviata” (The Fallen Woman) by Verdi.
