Feria Maestros del Arte
Outstanding artisans coming from far around Mexico will showcase high-quality handicrafts and folk art at the 18th annual Feria Maestros del Arte, Friday, November 8 through Sunday, November 10 at Chapala’s Club de Yates, located at the east end of Paseo Ramón Corona.
The event supports the livelihoods of hundreds of families, while fostering regional and international awareness to the plight of the nation’s endangered arts.

At that pavilion there will be tequila tasting on all three days and salsa samplings presented by Agustín of Viva Mexico Restaurant in San Juan Cosalá, at 2:30 p.m.
Entertainment includes local; duo Black String, who will open the fair Saturday at 9:30 a.m. A fashion show takes the stage at 11:30 a.m., Mariachi Mujer Mexicana performs at 12:30 p.m. Ballet Folklorico Guadalupana dances at 1:30 and Estaban Olivera will play classical guitar at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Olivera plays at 10 a.m., Marimba Bahia at noon, The Ballet at 2 p.m. and Black String at 3 p.m.
Manuel de la Peña will give a presentation on “The Cutting Edge of Paper: traditions and contemporary techniques, Saturday at 10:30 p.m. in Tent One. Carlos Barrera Reyes will explain backstrap loom weaving and brocade at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Barrera will speak on the rescue and exhibition of Na Bolom’s textile collection.

Chapala is holding two jam-packed days of free cultural events at the Vela (Sail) on the west end of the malecon, Saturday and Sunday, November 9 and 10. Musical performances, dance, live painting, photography, story-telling, workshops, theater, traditional crafts take the stage beginning about 11 a.m. each day and ending in the evening.
There is something for everyone. A few highlights include: “Son de Tule,” played by harps and salterio Saturday, 2:30 p.m.; a blues concert by Tren Nocturno Sunday, 3 p.m.; followed by flamenco fusion by Veronica Reyes-Cermantes and Estibaliz Moguel Canto, 3:40 p.m.
Art auction
More than 20 local artists will put works on the block at the Auction for Independent Journalism set for Saturday, November 9, 4 to 8 p.m., at La Cochera Cultural, Javier Mina 49, Ajijic.
Works going up for bid at average values of 2,000 to 3,000 pesos will include paintings, graphics, sculptures, photographs and mixed media donated by well-known artists such as Isidro Xilonsochitl, Antonio López Vega, Jesús López Vega, Dionicio Morales, Luis Pinedo, Daniel Palma, Xill Fessenden and Sergio Cuevas Corona, along with a number of new talents.
The program will include the raffle of a limited edition silk screen print by Manuel Felguérez, a music concert, a welcome drink for guests, free margaritas during the auction, a cash bar and snacks.
The event is a fund-raiser to support the operation of the Semanario Laguna, a local Spanish-language media outlet that covers news and events in the lakeshore area from Jocotepec to Chapala through a weekly print edition, as well as its website and Facebook page.
Choral concert
The Voces de Chapala Coro celebrates its 45th anniversary with a free concert, Saturday, November 9, noon at the Auditorio del Centro Cultural Antigua Presidencia in Chapala.
Talent Shows
The Chapala Talent Show, a benefit for the School for Special children will hold performances Sundays 7 p.m., November 10 and 24, December 8 and 22 and January 12 and 26 at the Spotlight Club in San Antonio Tlayacapan. Film Aficionados
Lake Chapala Society (LCS) members can take advantage of Film Aficionados screenings each Thursday, 2 p.m.
November 14, the film “Not One Less” (1999, China) will be screened. The plot centers on a 13-year-old substitute teacher who will be paid only if there’s not one student less at the end of the term. Winner of many prizes at film festivals around the world. (105 minutes.) LCS members only.

The Orquesta Tipica de Chapala will hold a concert celebrating its 9th anniversary, Wednesday, November 20, 6:30 p.m. at La Bodega Ajijic. Special guest star is harpist Roberto Diaz. LLT Playhouse Series
“One Man, Two Guvnors” by Richard Bean and directed by Nichola Hytner is the first of the National Theatre Live productions to be screened in LLT’s Playhouse Series this season, Saturday and Sunday, November 23 and 24, 4 p.m.
This is a classic Italian comedy, where sex, food and money are high on the agenda. The show is based on Carlo Goldoni’s 18th-century Italian commedia dell’arte piece, “The Servant of Two Masters.” It’s pretty funny in its original form, but Bean has transformed it into a delirious English carry-on set in Brighton in 1963, creating scenes and dialogue that often leave the audience helpless with hilarity.
London papers give it rave reviews: “A triumph of visual and verbal comedy. One of the funniest productions in the National’s history” – The Guardian; “Slapstick, satire and gags galore: a classic comedy hilariously updated” – The Times; “An evening of riotous delight” — The Daily Telegraph.

Ajijic Society of the Arts (ASA) continues with their annual themed show, “Imagine,” at the Centro Cultural Ajijic on the Plaza. ASA hosts will be available daily through November 14, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Community Orchestra
The Lake Chapala Community Orchestra’s performance on Sunday, December 1, 3 p.m. at the Lakeside Presbyterian Church is sold out. There are still some tickets available for the next day’s performance, Monday, December 2, 3 p.m.
This concert, Music for Art, is in association with the Ajijic Society of the Arts and pairs a diverse selection of orchestral music are paired with works by local artists. The orchestra will perform works by Beethoven, Borodin and Tchaikovsky and local vocalist Abby Rivera will perform much loved songs including “Memory” and “The Look of Love”. In addition the concert will feature the talented students of “Violines de Casa” coached by LCCO violinist Christopher Martin.
