Mac is back
Mac Morison returns to Club Exotica Friday, March 6, as host and headliner of his seventh benefit concert promoting dance for local children, entitled “Let Me Try Again.”
Morison sings tunes from Sinatra, Torme, Damone, Bennett and many others, accompanied by the Ajijic Showgirls, who will perform a stunning Vegas-style dance routine.
Other performers include Mariana Vigueras singing soul, pop, rock, jazz, Broadway and opera; Comedy Central comedian Jeff Capri; and Mike “Scatman” Fortier and his band, The Jazz Prophets, playing blues, jazz, rock and ballads.

Mujeres
In honor of International Women’s Day, an exhibition of the works of 11 women painters, all students of Javier Ramos, will open at the Centro Cultural Ajijic, Saturday, March 7, 5 p.m. Cocktails will be served.
African dance
“Why don’t monkeys speak?” is a show of African dance and theater with live music performing at the Auditorio de la Ribera, Saturday, March 7, 5 p.m. This production from the Afrocontemporaneo Scenic Laboratory is directed by Danitza Castañeda and is recommended for the entire family. Cine Music
The CineMusic show, Sunday, March 8 at the Auditorio de la Ribera, is a benefit for Musica Para Crecer, the small music school in San Juan Cosala.
Sharing the stage with mezzosoprano Cristy Caldwell are David Reyes Diaz and Carlos Torres Alvarez, two graduates of Musica Para Crecer. Also joining the cast will be Jonathan Omar Guzman, who performs with the Jamm Band, and Jorge Gonzalez-Reynoso of the rock band Gargamel.
The presentation features the most well-known and beloved songs from movies such as “The Godfather,” “Dirty Dancing,” “Ghost,” “Pearl Harbor” and “Gladiator.” Clips from the movies and soundtracks will be playing behind the performer. There is something from every era – from Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers to Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga.
Musica Para Crecer, under the direction of brothers Daniel and Juanpi Medeles, plays a vital role in San Juan Cosala. The school’s director Socorro (Coco) Wonshee says: “Besides developing the children’s musical talents, the most important aim of the program is to keep them away from the drugs, alcoholism, violence, and lives without hope and joy that are due to the poverty, vulnerability and marginalization present in so many of our towns.”

Mega art auction
Look for great deals on a selection of oils, watercolors, acrylics, drawings, photographs, sculptures and other works at the first annual mega art auction organized to benefit the Ajijic branch of the Cetac technological high school.
The works by 19 lakeside artists will go on the block Thursday, March 12, 4 p.m. at the school’s campus, located on the Ajijic highway next door to the Auditorio de la Ribera. Viewing of the pieces will begin at 10 a.m. Auction proceeds will support ongoing improvements at the facility.
BRAVO! Theatre
“The Book of Will” opens Thursday, March 12 at BRAVO! Theatre. This is the story of William Shakespeare’s friends, who after his death gathered the pieces of his plays together and put them into folios which were formally printed into his plays. Without his friends, we would never have even known who Shakespeare was, much less have been exposed to the beauty of his plays and sonnets.
Written in modern English, “The Book of Will” is a rollicking, joyous look at Shakespeare’s world and those who inhabited it – and the deep, timeless bonds of friendship.
The play will be performed in full period costume by some of Lakeside’s most experienced and talented actors.
Lynn Phelan directs a stellar cast. Show dates are March 12 to 15 and March 19 to 22. Opera Guild
The Chapala Opera Guild presents the Metropolitan Opera Live in HD transmission of “Der Fliegende Holländer” by Richard Wagner, Saturday, March 14, 11:55 a.m. at Movie Space Cinemas in Ajijic. Screenings will be held in three theaters, two with English subtitles and one with Spanish subtitles.
François Girard unveils a spellbinding new vision of the composer’s tale of a cursed sea captain doomed to sail the open ocean for eternity. With sweeping sets by John Macfarlane, Girard’s new production turns the Met stage into a rich, layered tableau reminiscent of a vast oil painting. Valery Gergiev conducts a brilliant cast led by bass-baritone Evgeny Nikitin as the Dutchman, with German soprano Anja Kampe as the devoted Senta, whose selfless love is what the Dutchman seeks. Bass Franz-Josef Selig is her father, Daland, and tenor Sergey Skorokhodov is her deserted former lover, Erik.

Bare Stage Theatre presents “These Shining Lives,” a drama by Melanie Marnich, directed by Phyllis Silverman, Friday to Sunday, March 27 to 29.
The plot revolves around the true-life circumstances of “The Radium Girls” – women in the 1920s, just newly accepted into the world of work but still considered expendable. (A big film release coming soon.) It’s a story of love and survival in its most transcendent sense, as the women refuse to allow the company, which has them painting glow-in-the-dark watch faces using the radium that steals their health, to kill their spirits or endanger the lives of those who come after them.

Community Orchestra
The Lake Chapala Community Orchestra will perform exciting concerts Sunday, March 29, and Monday, March 30, 3 p.m. at the Lakeside Presbyterian Church.
Entitled “Pages from History,” the concert will feature orchestral works written to commemorate famous historical events.
“Before film music gave us a musical background to history, composers such as Beethoven and Tchaikovsky composed orchestra works depicting significant historical events,” says Michael Reason, the orchestra’s conductor. “1812” by Tchaikovsky is perhaps the most famous of these but “Finlandia” by Sibelius and Egmont Overture by Beethoven are equally appropriate in their respective appraisal of history.
Reason believes that an orchestral concert should appeal to a wide audience and his ability to program concerts with works from diverse musical genres is a hallmark of the orchestra’s presentations.
Guest artists include local vocalist Judy Roberts singing a World War II song medley, and the orchestra’s principal clarinetist, Susanne Bullock, in Mozart’s “Clarinet Concerto.”
Music from the cinema will feature prominently, with James Horner’s magnificent score to “Apollo 13” and John Williams’ moving theme to Oliver Stone’s “JFK.” All the music is complimented with video projections.
