Leonard Cohen review

James Twyman continues with Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah Musical concerts, Friday, June 3 and Saturday, June 4, 7 p.m. at Namaste Village at Angel Flores 5 in Ajijic. Canadian mantra musician Brenda McMorrow opens for Twyman and the performance is sponsored by Unity Namaste of Ajijic, Lakeside’s new Unity Church.

Woofstock

The Iron Horse Saloon in Riberas del Pilar is hosting a fun-filled afternoon of peace, love and pets Saturday, June 4, 3 to 6 p.m. as a fundrasier for Lucky Dog rescue and adoption center. Live music by Old Souls and Daniel Cordero will back up tail waggin’ activities for your four-legged friends. A dogwash will benefit Lucky Dog, local vendors will sell dog leashes, homemade pet treats and outfits. All dogs are welcome, but must be on a leash.

Ajijic Society of the Arts holds its monthly membership meeting Monday, June 6, 10 to 11:30 a.m. The location for the meeting has moved to the Salón La Huerta in West Ajijic (next to the Smoke House). The parking lot will be open, as well as the building entrance from the parking lot. The cafe will serve refreshments and members are encouraged to purchase breakfast and beverage options. The ASA June Art Market is Saturday, June 11, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Lake Chapala Society, when 40 members will  show and sell their work.

Expect to find a wide variety of media, including paintings, glass, photography, ceramics, fiber arts and more!  There is no entrance fee.

Music on the malecon

A dozen or so bands will play on the Ajijic Malecon Sunday, June 11, noon to 11 p.m. There is no fee to enjoy The Muriel’s, Alameda, Historias Tensas, Limbo Steet, Marapé, Elixia, Dant, Kip, Mary’s Island, Groobeanders, Alba Dúo and the Visitors.

LLT Auditions

ART (Ajijic Readers Theatre) holds auditions for “Four Dogs And A Bone” by John Patrick Shanley, Thursday, June 16 and Friday, June 17.

Registration at 9:30 a.m. and auditions at 10 a.m. at  LLT on the terrace. Director Rosann Balbontin is looking for two women and two men.

LLT welcomes and encourages everyone interested in acting, new or experienced, to attend auditions.

Lake Chapala Orchestra

The new, improved and dynamic 40-piece semiprofessional Lake Chapala Orchestra showcases its talents at concerts scheduled Friday, June 17, and Saturday, June 18, at the Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Riberas del Pilar. A program entitled “Symphonic Traditions” will be the first time the orchestra has presented a traditional orchestral concert — featuring an overture, a concerto and a symphony.

Lakeside Little Theatre

pg20bLynn Gutstadt directs Shawn Sherwood, Mark Nichols, Linda Goman and Donna Burroughs  in the next ART (Ajijic Readers Theatre) presentation, “Match,” by Stephen Belber. The show takes the stage Friday, June 17, 7:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday, June 18 and 19, 4 p.m.

The play is a portrait of Tobi Powel, a charming, garrulous, deeply sad and aging dancer, choreographer and teacher who loves to knit.                            

Said the NY Daily News: “Uproariously funny; deeply moving, enthralling theater, Match has great beauty and tenderness, and abounds in wit.” “Prolific laughs and ear-to-ear smiles,” said NY Magazine.

Harp Fest

The Encuentro de Arpas, Salterios y Más music festival is held Wednesday, June 8, at the Centro Cultural González Gallo in Chapala. The event features a program of acoustic music running from 1 to 10 p.m.

The 20th edition of the Harps and More marathon will showcase around 60 guest artists performing different Latin American, classical and contemporary genres as soloists or ensembles. Spectators are welcome to come and go at their leisure. Plenty of shaded seating will be available in front of the stage and people are allowed to brings chairs, blankets, picnic gear and refreshments to spread out and relax around the venue’s gardens.

There is no charge for admission, but guests are encouraged to make donations.

Chapala women’s soccer team in action

In their last game, Joselyn Chavarria scored the only goal in the Chapala’s women’s soccer team’s 1-0 win against Mazamitla. Chapala play La Manzanilla de la Paz Sunday, June 5, noon, at the Juan Rayo municipal field in Chapala in the last game of the first phase of the Copa Jalisco. Come and cheer the team and help them advance to the next stage of the competition.
