Ribera Arts Review - November 25, 2023

Opera Gala

Soprano Estefanía Avilés and mezzosoprano Vanessa Jara, accompanied by Rodrigo Leal on baby grand piano and Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra violinist Esmiralda Miranova, will present a dozen arias and opera duos in Italian and French at the Centro para la Cultura y las Artes de la Ribera Saturday, November 25, 6 p.m.

This concert is a fundraiser for the all-woman directed opera company, Prime Donne, of which Aviles is one of the founders. Prime Donne will perform Mozart’s “Cosi Fan Tutti” at the Foro Larva on Avenida Juarez in downtown Guadalajara, December 8 and 9 at 7 p.m.

pg17b• Guadalajara native Alfi Guilera continues with an exhibition of his contemporary paintings at the Centro para la Cultura y las Artes de la Ribera gallery, and will offer a meet-the-artist session Friday, November 24, from 4 to 8 p.m.

• Monica Cardenas’ La Tiendita de Arte Los Ojos del Tiempo on the plaza in San Antonio continues with an exhibition of art by Emilio Alejandro Florez Saturday, open Monday to Friday,  10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

• The Yearly Art Show of artists from Ajijic and Lakeside is on exhibit at the Centro Cultural.

• Art by Juan Navarro and Margarito Lopez Vega is up at La Flor de La Laguna on the corner of 16 de Septiembre and Morelos in Ajijic.

Art Market

The Artists Alliance of Lake Chapala will hold its monthly Art Market Saturday, November 25, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Garden of Dreams Boutique Hotel, Constitucion 105 in Ajijic. The featured medium this month is glass, mosaics, sculptures and ceramics. More than 50 artists and craftspeople will sell their creations. Enjoy live music, food and drinks in a garden setting.

Met Opera Live HD

“X: The Life and Times of Malcolm X” is a recorded feature Lakeside Little Theatre presentation of the Met Opera Live HD series presented November 26, 27 and 28 at 4 p.m. This is the second opera of the 23/24 Met Live Season shown at LLT, produced by the Chapala Opera Guild.

Live Music

• The Orquesta Típica de Chapala (OTCH) celebrates its 13th anniversary with a free concert at the auditorium of the Antigua Presidencia in Chapala at the corner of Morelos and Hidalgo, Saturday, November 25, 7 p.m. A toast will be made and botanas served beginning 5 p.m.  A cash bar will be open with proceeds benefiting the OTCH. Raffles of T-shirts, mugs, and other items will be held and donations are appreciated.

• Las Voces del Lago, 60 singers led by director Ken Turner and accompanied by  Don Beaudreau, will give a concert at a holiday show, “Season of Light,” performing works of Christmas, Hanukkah, and holiday choral music. Also performing will be “Nova Lux” consisting of 16 outstanding choral singers who perform a variety of secular and sacred pieces, both accompanied and a cappella. The concert is Thursday, to Sunday, November 30, December 1 and 2, at 3 p.m. at the Lakeside Presbyterian Church. • The Chieko Collective performs Saturday, December 2, 7 p.m. at the Centro para la Cultura y las Artes de la Ribera. The collective is a young and multicultural ensemble that creates original compositions inspired by jazz, classical impressionism and Latin American music. • Soul Sacrifice, a Carlos Santana tribute band, will perform at The Iron Horse Bar and Grill Saturday, December 9, 5:30 p.m. as a fundraiser for the Tiopa Banextli Health Clinic. 250 pesos cover.

LLT auditions

Ballet

The Joven Ballet HH and the students of various dance schools from both Lakeside and Guadalajara will perform “An Afternoon of Magical Dance” at the Centro para la Cultura y las Artes de la Ribera on Friday, December 8, 6:30 p.m. Tickets, 100 pesos, are available at the box office,  Wednesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.; and Sundays from noon to 1:30 p.m. or via voyalteatro.com.

BRAVO Xmas concert

Timothy G. Ruff Welch has put together a musical program that will charm, inspire, entertain and include everyone in the spirit of the season at Bravo Theatre on December 10, 13 and 17 at 4 p.m. and December 12 at 7 p.m.

See larger than life Rudolph & Blitzen, Frog & Toad, Mrs Claus, ten-foot Nutcrackers, a sexy vamp, Christmas goodies and a host of other holiday favorites.

The audience will also see two charming “new to Lakeside stages” performers (including an adorable 14-year-old girl with big voice), two more “new to BRAVO!” professionals, and some old favorites.  

A crew of remarkable and incredibly creative designers are working hard to make the stage and the whole theater a truly magical experience.

Women-only exhibit

Women artists are invited to participate in “De Mi Alma” (From My Soul), the last exhibition of 2023 at the Centro Cultural Ajijic, that opens December 16, 5 p.m. and runs through January 3.

Up to two pieces that do not exceed 24 inches width or 1 that does not exceed 3.9 feet width may be entered. If you want to show a sculpture, please send an email in advance to ccajijic @gmail.com.

Works must be delivered to the cultural center office by December 14, open 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The title, author’s name, technique, dimensions and price must be written on the back of each piece.
