A Covid Chronicle

This week I ventured out to cover a Chapala government news happening. It was not exactly an earth-shaking event, but there was a sense of urgency to be on hand afterwards for a press gaggle with the mayor to get clarifications on how City Hall will handle the shift to the Covid-19 new normal scheme of things.

pg12I was chomping at the bit to get back to familiar boots-on-the-ground reporting after essentially working on remote control since March 17, the last day I left home wearing my journalist’s cap. At age 71, it seemed like going into self-quarantine was the sensible thing to do.

It’s been a challenge to adjust to new modes of news gathering, relying upon phones and electronic devices, rather than first-hand observation, to keep abreast of what’s happening beyond my doorstep.

I felt proud of jumping through technological hoops to cover my first virtual press conference via Zoom. I couldn’t have done it without the patient guidance of my younger and savvy Mexican colleagues. ¡Gracias compañeros! Above all, I was delighted to discover that you can teach new tricks to an old newshound.
