This week, people around the world celebrated Saint Patrick’s Day on March 17. In the USA, folks enjoy an occasion to feast on corned beef and cabbage, swill down green beer and dress in green clothing to avoid getting pinched.
Mexico holds a distinctive affection for the patron saint of Ireland in tribute to the Irish soldiers who defected from the U.S. Army to fight on the side of this country in the 1846-1848 Mexican-American War. In Mexico City, festivities honoring the memory of the Batallón de San Patricio include a lively bagpipe parade, Celtic music and dance events, lectures and films on the history of the Irish soldiers.
St. Patrick is also the patron saint of the Jalisco seaside town of San Patricio Melaque.
