A sign hanging on the outside of the former Black Coffee site confirms what has been rumored for weeks. The building is being remodeled to become a lakeside branch of Starbucks.

It didn’t take ten minutes for the news to trigger heated discussion on social media. Notably, expat residents were the ones posting the most negative reactions. We don’t want or need multinational chains coming here to compete with local businesses, many bitterly proclaimed. 

While several mexicanos concurred with that opinion, most others seem pleased that Starbucks is coming to town, or at least remain neutral about its impact on local competitors.

A common thread among coffee connoisseurs is the inferior quality of the Starbucks brand. Most local coffee shops offer better brew, they insist.
