Many people, including a lot of local real estate hustlers, like to tell expat newcomers they can get along just fine without understanding or speaking Spanish. In my book, that is lousy advice in a practical sense, and an insult to the native folks who graciously accept our presence here at lakeside.

I applaud every newbie who makes the effort to master some level of Mexico’s official language. It makes daily living more manageable. It enriches appreciation for the country’s amazing culture and local customs. It is a sign of respect.

Since the majority of our immigrant population is of retirement age, it is common for many to think and say they are too old to learn a foreign language. Sorry, but that’s a lame excuse.

Yes, learning a new language can be challenging for older adults. The brain changes with age. While young people can master new sounds, grammar patterns, and vocabulary more quickly because of greater brain flexibility, older adults generally need more time and repetition to remember unfamiliar words and structures.
