Is Facebook loosing relevance?

This past month, Meta subsidiaries Facebook and Instagram lost users for the first time in their histories.

I’m guessing that as the pandemic withdraws, in-person intercourse will return again, and we may soon be hugging and kissing like Italian hitmen.

There’s proof that Facebook makes people feel depressed, abandoned and alone. I felt some of that myself. Everybody but me seemed to be having a party or on vacation or buying new clothes. I never saw anybody slumped over, next to a night table full of pill bottles. Billions are on Facebook. Even if those feeling left out are just a small percentage, it’s many millions lost in their introspection.

I had become a Facebook member purely for the neighborliness of it all, like chatting over the fence to find out why my grass looks like an artillery corps retreated over it and his looks like astroturf. Within three weeks I had 227 new friends, 209 of whom I’d never met. And two or three who only spoke Farsi. But the illusion is that you’re a hot people magnet.
