Do I dare to fly the ‘Friendly’ skies

Air travel is in the news again. If you’re ready to embark, are you properly sedated?

Most expats here at Lakeside have connections north of the border -- family, friends, doctors, psycho house-renters. So, for most of us, there’s always a dreaded plane ride in the offing. And this year’s offings have given new meaning to the words, “Holy Mother of God!”

Last year produced an unusually high number of in-flight rages among passengers worldwide, resulting in fist fights and brash verbal conflicts. Aviation experts say they have no clue why, but there are now double locks on the pilot’s cabin doors.

And this summer, there has been nothing but chaos. Thousands straggle about as refugees, with lost luggage, cancelled or delayed flights and sometimes missing children—true even for Air Canada and Quantas, both of which usually have outstanding records. How bad is it? This week, Quantas executives became baggage handlers, according to The Guardian.
