Jalisco Governor Enrique Alfaro comes from a political party (Citizens’ Movement) that enjoys scant national recognition. It’s safe to say, however, that in the past month, millions of Mexicans have suddenly become aware of this feisty, 46-year-old political maverick.
Alfaro’s growing notoriety stems from implementing strict Covid-19 mitigation measures and timelines that always seem to be one step ahead of the federal government.
Concerned that President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador was dragging his heels over the coronavirus emergency, Alfaro chose to initiate a voluntary lockdown in Jalisco on March 18 – prior to the federal government’s similar order. This week, he made stay-at-home and mask-wearing measures mandatory, again forcing more draconian measures on his constituents than the federal mandate.
