City dines on huge cake

Some 22,000 hungry citizens gathered in the Plaza Guadalajara on Sunday to feast upon a 1,200-meter-long cake laid on by the municipal government to celebrate El Dia de los Reyes.

Weighing 1.5 tons, the Rosca de Reyes was the result of 17,388 man hours of work by 250 chefs and students from the Colegio Gastronomico Internacional. Mayor Ramiro Hernandez cut the first slice at 10 a.m.

The recipe for a cake this size? 520 kilos of flour, 190 liters of condensed milk, 37 kilos of powdered milk, 4,972 eggs, 27 kilos of yeast, 158 kilos of margarine, nine kilos of salt, 161 liters of water, eight liters of orange essence, 75 kilos of sugar, 75 kilos of vegetable fat, 200 kilos of quince, 28 kilos of cherries.

The cake contained 100 baby Jesus figurines, but those who found one in their slice were relieved to know they were not obliged to provide tamales on the Dia de la Candelaria (February 2) for the thousands who were present, as Mexican tradition dictates. Instead they were given presents by the sponsors of the event.

El Deposito

Cerveza enthusiasts, take note: El Deposito World Beer Store has opened a third bar at Lopez Cotilla 1905, between Francisco Javier Gamboa and Juan Ruiz de Alarcon. With existing bars on Avenida Chapultepec and the Glorieta de los Caballos on Lopez Mateos (across from the Hotel Riu), El Deposito stocks hundreds of different craft beers from Mexico and all over the world.
