Free trees

Help convert Guadalajara into an “urban forest,” by growing a tree in your backyard at no cost. That’s the idea to improve air quality and aid the environment from Extra, a Jalisco-based civil association formed of media groups and private businesses.

Extra aims to make Jalisco the state with the most trees in all of Mexico, with the first step of the reforestation project being to plant five million trees in Guadalajara. Extra runs a metropolitan nursery which produces one million trees per year, including species suitable for urban and suburban areas of Jalisco.

There are up to 30 different types of trees and plants available to the public, with the benefits of planting one in your garden including oxygen, shade and even fresh fruit or flowers. The many options include ash, pines, cedar, ceiba, olive, mango and guava trees.

Extra will be giving away trees in Plaza Universidad (Avenida Alcalde and Juarez) on April 9 and 16 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. If you can’t make it then, call 3123-1133 to claim your free tree or for more information visit www.bosqueurbano.org.mx.
