Clasico fever

Guadalajara’s four professional soccer teams play go head-to-head in two “clasicos” in the next two weeks.

On Friday, April 12, the “clasico universitario” pits Leones Negros of the public University of Guadalajara (UdeG) against their historic rivals Estudiantes Tecos of the private Autonomous University of Guadalajara (UAG). Leones Negros currently lead Mexico’s second division, the Ascenso MX, with just two games left before the playoffs begin. Tecos are currently fifth, meaning both sides still have a chance of being promoted to the Liga MX. Estadio Jalisco, Friday, April 12, 8.30 p.m..

The following weekend, Atlas, now seemingly safe from being demoted to the second division, host rivals Chivas at the 60,000-seater Estadio Jalisco. Atlas look certain of a place in the playoffs but Chivas must win to retain any chance of joining them. Expect a sell-out crowd and a raucous atmosphere. Estadio Jalisco, Saturday, April 20, 9 p.m.
