Naked Bike Ride

Cyclists will strip off their clothing (to varying degrees) on Saturday, June 8,  as Guadalajara participates in the World Naked Bike Ride for the third time.

Hundreds of bikers are expected to turn up at the ride’s starting point: the obelisk at Avenida Mexico and Chapultepec.   The “make-up” preparation takes place from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., when the ride itself will start and follow this route: Chapultepec, Hidalgo, Belisario Dominguez, Revolucion, 16 de Septiembre, Washington, Enrique Díaz de León, Mesquite, Cruz del Sur, Lapizlazulli, Topacio and Mariano Otero to the Niños Heroes monument on Chapultepec.

The rides, which now take place in more than 80 cities worldwide, are billed as a “peaceful, imaginative and fun protest against oil dependency and car culture. A celebration of the bicycle and also a celebration of the power and individuality of the human body. A symbol of the vulnerability of the cyclist in traffic.”

Not all cyclists take off all their clothes. According worldnakedbikeride.org, the rides are “clothing optional and the dress code is “as bare as you dare.”

The site’s FAQ section also offers practical advice to cyclists, such as using sunscreen and shoes, and discussing whether riding naked will damage one’s genitals.

Participants are encouraged to decorate their bodies and bikes and many will express messages that strike at the core of the ride: opposition to oil dependency and celebration of the human body.

US Consulate donates toys

In recognition of the close collaboration between the United States Consulate General in Guadalajara and the Desarrollo Integral de la Familia (Family Development Agency or DIF) in the state of Jalisco, Consul General Susan K. Abeyta (right) this week presented Jalisco DIF President Lorena Jassibe Arriaga (left) with a donation of educational toys for children who have been victims of domestic violence.  The donation of the toys, which have a value of 2,900 dollars, was made possible thanks to the “support of U.S. citizens,” the Consulate said.  The toys, along with chairs and desks, will see use in the DIF’s women’s refuge.
