Catrinas

For the fourth year in a row, Guadalajara city hall will be sponsoring a show of catrinas in the city center created mainly by local artists and schools. Dozens of catrinas will be displayed in plazas and on sidewalks from next week, many pertaining to renowned figures.

Fine food, wine

The International Gastronomic Festival from November 7 to 9 at the Expo Guadalajara features expositor booths, competitions, VIP dinners, wine tastings, round-table discussions, cooking demonstrations, entertainment and a whole lot more.

This year’s festival has a decidedly Gallic flavor, with a French pavilion offering gourmet dining and culture.

Inspired by the works of Jules Verne and silent films, the creative local group Pneumus will bring their accordions and large movie screen to the French pavilion on Friday, November 7, 3 and 8 p.m. and Sunday, November 9, 3 and 7 p.m.

Guadalajara’s popular, all-female group Femmes de Serge interpret classic French songs (Edith Piaf, etc.) on Saturday, November 8, 2:30 and 8 p.m., also in the pavilion.

Some of Guadalajara’s top restaurants will be participating in the three-day show, including the likes of Santo Coyote and others.

Chefs of note giving demonstrations and cooking up meals include Christian Leroy from Optimus L’equipe, Stephane Thomas from Au Pied De Cochon, Alexandra Rendón from Spacio Gourmet and Guy Santoro from the Hotel St. Regis in Mexico City.

Last year’s event attracted 74 expositors and almost 7,000 visitors. More than 2,000 gourmet meals were served, according to organizers.

The Gastronomic Festival is open on Friday, November 7, noon to 9 p.m.; Saturday, November 8, noon to 9 p.m. and Sunday, November 9, noon to 7 p.m.

Pre-sold tickets are available online at a cost of 45 pesos for each day.  They will also be sold at the door at a slightly higher cost.

Expo Guadalajara is located at the intersection of Avenida Mariano Otero and Las Rosas.
