Super Bowl at Amsoc

The American Society is hosting a football fete this Sunday with its 60-inch TV the focal point along with snacks, chili an open bar and some friendly asides about who’s team will win. The doors open at 3 p.m. A cash bar will be open and a 70 peso donation will allow you to sample some snacks and enjoy a bowl of chili. Bring some snacks to share. Ballet

20-year old Melissa Rodríguez is leaving the Ensamble de Ballet Clásico de Zapopan for the Compañía Nacional de Danza de México after only 5 years training as a dancer.

Bulls

The Plaza de Toros Nuevo Progresso opens its 48th year with five Sundays of the fiesta brava, all starting promptly at 4:30 p.m. 

February 8 leads off with Triumfant Novilladas: three voice toreadores: Tapatio Carlos Casanueva, Diego Sanchez from Auguascalientes and Gerardo Rivera from Tlaxcala, with six bulls coming from Monserrat ranch. 

February 15, Daniel Luque goes mano a mano with Octavio Garcia “El Payo.” Fernando de la Mora provides six bulls. 

February 22, Pablo Hermoso de la Mendoza leads off followed by Fermin Rivera and Diego Silveti. Ferrnando de la Mora will showcase two bulls and San Isidro four.

March 1, Alejandro Talavante, Joselito Adame and Juan Pablo Sanchez face six bulls from Los Encinos.

March 8, Alfredo Rios “El Conde,” Arturo Saldivar and Sergio Flores take on six bulls from Barralva. 

Tickets can be purchased through Ticketmaster or at the Plaza, located on Calzada Independencia across from Estadio Jalisco. Tel. 3651-8378. Parking is available. The Macrobus stop is Monumental. Bus route 662 heading toward the Zoo also stops at the plaza. The plaza opens at 2 p.m. for lunch and mariachi and the gates open at 3:30 p.m. for Novilladas and 2:30 p.m. for corridas.

Traffic snags

The tunnel on Avenida Federalismo leading to Avenida Washington is in darkness after work on the expansion of the light train service cut the electricity. City 

Hall has warned that the winding tunnel is dangerous for drivers but it hasn’t specified a date by which it will fix the problem. 

The three central lanes of Avenida Lopez Mateos Sur from Cd. Bugambilias to the Periferico have opened again after reconstruction work. The second phase of the project is now underway, which consists of working on the lateral lanes. Expect continued long waits during rush hours The reconstruction of these will cost an estimated 25 million pesos ($US 1.7 million) and no date for their completion has yet been set. 

Holocaust commemorated

Holocaust commemorated in Guadalajara —Zapopan Art Museum (Museo de Artes de Zapopan) commemorated 70 years since the liberation of survivors from Auschwitz concentration camp with a photography and art exhibition that opened on Tuesday January 27. The activities began with the lighting of six candles, one to represent each of the six million killed in the holocaust, followed by the presentation of an episode from the BBC series, “Auschwitz, the Nazis, and the Final Solution.” The “Return to Life” photo exhibition organized by Israel’s Yad Vashem museum was inaugurated and will remain open for the next month. There is no charge for entrance.
