Baseball

Local baseball fans could be watching the stars of the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Deigo Padres playing in the Telmex Stadium in 2016 if Charros de Jalisco owner Armando Navarro gets his way.

Navarro and former Dodgers great Fernando Valenzuela have both been invited to an open day at Dodger Stadium on April 6.  Navarro said they will present the Dodger management with a letter inviting them to participate in next year’s Tequila Tournament, the inaugural 2015 version of which concludes next weekend at the Telmex Stadium.

If the Dodgers and Padres agree to play in the pre-season tournament, the stadium’s capacity will be increased from 12,000 to 18,000, Navarro said.

The Torneo de Tequila continues this weekend at the Estadio Telmex in Zapopan. Although the Charros de Jalisco are not involved, some of the top teams from the Liga Mexicana de Baseball (LMB) are playing. Tickets cost 100 pesos and can be purchased at the gate. The schedule is:

Colorful buildings

The program to illuminate downtown Guadalajara’s most eminent buildings at night enters its second stage next week.

On March 26, in addition to the Metropolitan Cathedral, Teatro Degollado and others, the switches will be thrown to bathe six more notable edifices and monuments in colorful and creative lighting.

The chosen buildings are the Santa María de Gracia and San Agustin churches, the Biblioteca Iberoamericana and the Palacio Municipal. In addition, the Plaza Universidad and the Rotonda de los Jaliscienses Ilustres will also be lit up for the pleasure of nighttime visitors to the city center.

In total, the Guadalajara municipal government plans to illuminate some 50 buildings and monuments.  Places that are already illuminated include:

the Aranzazu, San Francisco, Santa Mónica  and Expiatorio churches; Los Arcos; the Minerva; the Plaza Liberación and the fountain in Plaza Guadalajara.
