Vegan food sale

Finding vegan food in Guadalajara is more than challenging – it’s almost impossible. In such a meat-loving society vegans are definitely in a tiny minority.

But the city’s vegans are finally becoming organized and using social media to spread the word and network among themselves.

The Sabor Vegano Mexico Facebook group now has 16,000 likes and has been organizing “solidarity sales” and workshops in Guadalajara for some time.

Their next solidarity sale will be on Sunday, May 3, at Peninsula 2454, Colonia Bosques de la Victoria.

The aim is to distribute 500 tacos and 100 tortas ahogadas.

Veganism is the practice of abstaining from the use of animal products, particularly in diet, as well as following an associated philosophy that rejects the commodity status of sentient animals.

Peace Laboratory

Barbara Sackl, an Austrian actress, singer, dancer, director, producer and teacher, is offering a “Peace Laboratory” for students seeking to escape from the stresses of modern life and connect with a sense of inner calm. Sackl will take students through a range of vocal, breathing and physical exercises, and they will have an opportunity to share their experiences in small group discussions.

Students should bring comfortable clothing and a yoga mat or blanket.

The workshop will be held in two sessions, on Wednesday, May 6 and Thursday, May 7 from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Expo Guadalajara at the corner of Av. Mariano Otero and Las Rosas. Cost is 200 pesos.

The following day, Sackl will offer a presentation about relations in Israel/Palestine that will feature experts and activists, who will share their experiences of the crisis.

The event will be held in Sala 10 of the Expo Guadalajara on Friday, May 8 from 8.30 p.m. Cost 100 pesos.

Garage sale

Appliances, decorative items, toys, accessories and children’s and adult clothing will be offered to the public at bargain prices on Saturday, May 16, in a “garage sale” at St. Mark’s Anglican Church in Guadalajara.

Expatriate families from the United States, Canada and other countries who are going to relocate outside Guadalajara are the sellers.

“This is an opportunity for Mexicans who want to acquire brands that are otherwise difficult to find in Mexico,” said a spokesman.

The items will be sold from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. St. Mark’s is a two-minute drive north of Plaza Mexico in Colonia Terrazas Monraz near the end of bus route 33A. Chichimecas 836 at the corner of Aztecas. (33) 3641-6620.

TlaquepArte moves to Expo

TlaquepArte, the annual exhibition of handicrafts, gifts and decorations, will be moving from its Tlaquepaque venue to the Expo Guadalajara this year.

The change is propelled by the success of previous exhibitions, as the fair expands and welcomes 250 artisans, more than ever before. The event offers wonderful opportunities for gift-buying and browsing, with a diverse range of items from Mexico and across Latin America. Jewelry, ceramics, lacquered boxes, Mexican silver, mirrors, furniture, belts, wallets, women’s clothing, hammocks, bags, masks, photo frames, religious items and much more are on offer, and shoppers buy directly from the artisans themselves.

TlaquepArte is open daily Friday, May 15 through Monday, May 18, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Expo Guadalajara is at the corner of Av. Mariano Otero and Las Rosas.
