Summer Folk Dance

The Universidad de Guadalajara Ballet Folklorico is gearing up for another summer season of exciting shows at the Teatro Degollado in Guadalajara. Exact dates are not yet confirmed, but the folk dance season starts in July and runs for around two months, with performances on Sunday mornings.

This year’s repertoire will take in dances from the states of Veracruz, Michoacan, Guerrero and, of course, Jalisco, with its breathtaking “La Negra,” “La Culebra” and “Jarabe Tapatio” finales.

Founded more than 50 years ago, the UdG Ballet Folklorico is renowned throughout the world and comprises 30 dancers and 25 singers and musicians. Competition for places is fierce. Many of the dancers begin their careers in the university’s children’s troupe at the tender age of seven or eight.

Tickets for performances cost from 80 to 350 pesos.  They will be available at the theater box office, seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., or through Ticketmaster at (33) 3818-3800 and www.ticketmaster.com.mx.

Another H&M

Swedish fashion chain H&M opens its second Guadalajara outlet Saturday, June 6 in the Andares Mall in Zapopan.   Company representatives promise entertainment and special opening day offers  from noon on.

Anyone who brings a bag of usable clothing that is no longer worn will be entitled to a 15-percent discount in the purchases of three items from the store.

H&M’s other outlet is in the Galerias Mall.

Andares is located on Avenida Patria, just before the intersection with Avenida Acueducto.

Naked riders

Guadalajara cyclists will join the ranks of thousands of others across the globe, when they strip down and pedal up for the World Naked Bike Ride.

The event, to be held on Saturday, June 6, will be the fifth consecutive ride of its kind. Event organizers are expecting 500 naked attendees, and hope to draw attention to the pollution problem and the vulnerability of cyclists.

The ride starts at 9 a.m. at the Glorieta Niños Heroes. Cyclists will make their way to the Glorieta Minerva, travel up Lopez Mateos Norte, and down Calle Manuel Acuña, Calle Federalismo Norte and Avenida Hidalgo in the direction of the cathedral.
