Hypnosis

John Milton, sometimes billed as “the greatest hypnotist in America,” returns to Guadalajara for seven shows in July.

Although some question the authenticity of the hypnosis, Milton has performed his interactive shows in various cities throughout Mexico and other parts of the world for more than 20 years.

The show is quite lighthearted. Milton selects audience members to come on stage, where he uses his talents to try and hypnotize them and influence them into performing tricks.

The son of popular Brazilian hypnotist Taurus do Brazil, Milton studied under his father and followed the same career path.

The shows take place at the Teatro Galerias (Lapizlazuli 3445, across from Plaza del Sol) on Thursday, July 9, 8 p.m.; Friday, July 10, 6 and 9:30 p.m.; Saturday, July 11, 6 and 9:15 p.m. and Sunday, July 12, 5 and 8 p.m.

Tickets are from 180-260 pesos and available from the theater box office, Monday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. or from Ticketmaster. Call (33) 3631-0708 for more information.

This show will be in Spanish.

St. Mark’s

A traditional July the Fourth picnic on the pretty lawn of St. Mark’s Anglican/Episcopal Church in Guadalajara is set for Saturday, July 4, 2 p.m.

Barbecue sandwiches, baked beans, coleslaw, watermelon and cake — all homemade — will be washed down with lemonade or beer, wine and tequila from a cash bar. Members of the expatriate social group Mexpat will also attend the event and the general public is invited as well.

“I’m hoping to win back the championship in the annual watermelon-seed-spitting contest,” said St. Mark’s rector, the Rev. Dr. Jim Priddy. A three-legged race and beanbag tossing tournament are also planned, along with other games.

About 70 people attended last year. The donation for tickets is 100 pesos, with tickets for kids aged under ten at 70 pesos. Tickets are available at the church or may be reserved by July 1 at (33) 3817-4511, This email address is being protected from spambots.
