Farmer’s markets
As more Tapatios become aware of the benefits of eating sustainably produced food, more farmer’s market spring up in the metro area. Perhaps the most well-known is the one held in the plush Andares Mall in Zapopan each Saturday morning. But there are others, some held in he driveways of private homes. Here’s a selection.
Círculo de Producción: Every Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Morelos 2178, two blocks Centro Magno.
Expo Ecologica Tapatia: Saturdays, 4 to 9:30 p.m. on Avenida Mexico median strip, one block Chapultepec.
Eco-Tianguis Ex Convento: Sundays, every two weeks at Av. Juarez 638, one block Federalismo.
Feria de Productores: Wednesdays, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Club de Leones in Colonia Tepeyac Casino (next neighborhood after Chapalita). Also on Sundays, every two weeks.
Mercadito Las Colonias: Sundays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Calle Colonias 221, Colonia Americana.
Books for kids
If you have any Spanish- or English-language books for children or young people that are surplus to your requirements, then you can donate them to public libraries (bibliotecas publicas) in the Guadalajara metropolitan area.
A collection program will run through the end of August. The books can be left at any branch of La Borra de Café in the city. A convenient one is located at the corner of Avenida Guadalupe and Niño Obrero in Colonia Chapalita.
Indigenous art
Contemporary artwork from several indigenous tribes in Mexico can be seen in all its glory at a new exhibit that debuted last week at the Casa Museo Lopez Mateos in downtown Guadalajara.
The show, titled “Entre artes y artesanías: expresiones culturales de los pueblos del México contemporáneo,” features the work of the Zapoteca, Wixárika, Purépecha and Nañu peoples in the states of Michoacan, Puebla, Chihuahua, Oaxaca and Jalisco.
The itinerant show is curated by the Museo Itinerante de Arte Indígena Contemporáneo and has been exhibited in seven cities: Montreal, Boston, Washington, New York, Austin, Chetumal and Ciudad Obregón.
A guided visit of the exhibit is scheduled for Thursday, July 23, 8 p.m.
The Casa Museo Lopez Portillo is at Liceo 177. It also houses a fine collection of colonial furniture.
Municipal Band
With construction workers having commandeered the city center, the Banda Municipal de Guadalajara has been forced to look for pastures new. For the time being, at least, their free Tuesday, 6:30 p.m. performances will take place in the Parque El Refugio, on Calzada Federalismo, between Angulo and Heerera y Cairo.
