Mushrooms
The first Feria del Hongo Guadalajara 2015, showcasing the amazing world of mushrooms, will take place at the Club de Leones on Saturday, August 8 and Sunday, August 9.
Apart from the exhibits, conferences are planned featuring mushroom farmers and experts in the field.
Around 1,000 species of mushroom and fungi exist in the state of Jalisco, it is reckoned.
The Club de Leones is at Avenida de los Leones 75, Fracc. Tepeyac Casino, Zapopan.
Car lovers
More than 200 autos will be on display at the fifth national Car Fest to be held at Multiplaza del Valle in Tlajomulco Saturday, August 8 beginning 2 p.m. The event will also show off go-karts and allow you to race them on a track, an exhibition of drift racing, simulated races, a commercial area with car products and presentations of rock and electronic music. The site of the show is Avenida Concepcion 6800 in San Jose del Valle in Tlajomulco. Free entrance.
Museo Pantaleon Panduro
After discovering theft of some seven ceramic pieces worth of about 400,000 pesos held in storage during recent remodeling, the Museo Pantaleon Panduro in Tlaquepaque is closed to visitors except those participating in the Your Vacation in the Museum program.
Investigators of the state attorney general’s office are dusting for fingerprints. The museum holds a collection of years of ceramics from around Mexico all of which received National Ceramics Pantaleon Panduro prizes. No date has been given for reopening of the museum.
Airport charros
The new look for baggage attendants for travelers from arriving flights at Guadalajara’s International Airport takes its cue from that of Jalisco’s charros and mariachis, with embroidered shirts, large colorful charro-stlye bow ties and pseudo pitiado belts.
Cabañas art investment
Jalisco will invest six million pesos to purchase art for the Instituto Cultural Cabañas (ICC) collection, which has not been increased in more than 30 years. Works of 18 artists from the last three decades is being looked at by the selection committee, which is expected to choose 11 or 12 pieces. The committee is composed of Secretariat of Culture and ICC officials, artists and curators.
Folk art awards
Young artisans were awarded monetary prizes to the tune of 1.3 million pesos at the third annual National Contest for Young Creators of Popular Folk Art, held for the first time in Guadalajara. The winning pieces (above and right) were fashioned from a variety of materials, including clay, textiles, vegetable fibers, metal, wood and paper. Contestants ranged in age from 18 to 29 and came from Jalisco and 14 other states.
Jalisco artists in GDL
In this third edition of Festival de las Artes Jalisco (Festa) some 48 municipalities will showcase their best and brightest in the arts in the state capital.
Two of Jalisco’s legacy artists, author Vicente Leñero and compositor Consuelo Velazquez will be given homage in the opening and closing ceremonies — the first a theatrical work and the second a concert — both to be held at the Teatro Degollado August 8 and 15, 8 p.m. Entrance is free with a ticket picked up at least one hour before the events at the Degollado ticket booth.
Indigenous films will show August 8 and 9, 5 and 8 p.m. in the auditorium of Centro Cultural Patio de los Ángeles. An photographic exhibition, “Amacueca,” by Fernando Arias will be on show at the Ex Convento del Carmen.
Various folcloric ballet troupes and classical and traditional musical groups will play in various plazas and commercial centers throughout the week. All events are free and open to the public. For specific sites and times see sc.jalisco.gob.mx/festajalisco.
Money for young musicians
Jalisco is dropping two million pesos to purchase instruments and hire music instructors at ten regional music schools that will help orchestras, bands, mariachis and rondallas throughout the state. The program under which the grants were given, ECOS, Music for Development, now suppports 30 centers throughout the state.
