Amsoc Book Club schedule change

The American Society (Amsoc) Book Club has voted to move its monthly meetings from the second to the fourth Tuesday of each month.

Due to all the Christmas activities, the December meeting has been canceled and the group will have a chance to recoup from the holidays before meeting again on January 26.

The Book Club selections (all books are available on Kindle) for the first four months of 2016 are:  

January 28 – “The Stonecutter” by Camilla Lackberg.  Mystery thriller, 2012. February 18 – “The Underdogs” by Mariano Azuela. Classic Mexican fiction, 1915. March 24 – “Too Much Happiness” by Alice Munro.   Fiction, 2009. April 21 – “Awakenings” by Oliver Sacks. Medical Case History, 1973.

Pet donations needed

Animal welfare NGO Adopta Guadalajara is holding a Gran Colecta (Great Collection) to assist the efforts of dog and cat rescuers. Welcome donations include pet food, clothing, cat litter, toys and any there articles suitable for dogs and cats.  Also needed are blankets or towels (either new or used in good condition) for use in sterilization programs.  The event takes place Sunday, December 13, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Avenida de las Rosas 359, between Privada de las Rosas and Ermita.  Products will also be on sale to raise funds for Adopta Guadalajara programs.

Not for anyone scared of heights

The tallest drop tower in the world is how a new attraction installed outside Plaza Galerias is being described.   The attraction will be in place throughout the holiday season. Child riders must exceed a minimum height.

Fashion, furniture at Expo GDL

Expo Guadalajara hosts the second edition of Outlet de Moda y Mueble this weekend, with organizers promising discounts on fashions, footwear, accessories and furniture between 20 and 70 percent.  

Brands on offer at 165 stands at the show will include Mundo Terra, Felipe Rentería, Bobois, André Badi, LOB, Mukoy, Mashala, Gran Bazar, Alejandro Rocha, yArtema, Astuin, Versa Muebles, Del Toro Mu and others.

Around 20,000 visitors are expected to attend the event, which runs from Friday, December 11 to Sunday, December 13, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. each day. Entry is free.

Star Wars nocturnal debut

May the force be with you to keep you up for a midnight 3D showing of the new Star Wars sequel, “The Force Awakens,” at Cinemex at Plaza Gourmeteria, and most Cinepolis theaters, on Thursday, December 17. Both theater chains are selling tickets quickly and expect full houses for the late-night screenings.  Versions in English with subtitles are available.

Witnesses host convention

Jehovah’s Witnesses will discuss the keys to family happiness during their 2015 “Imitate Jesus!” convention at the Presidente Intercontinental Hotel in Guadalajara this weekend. The English-language program will also include an examination of Jesus’ famed Sermon on the Mount.  Sessions begin at 9:20 a.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, December 11-13. Admission is free and all are welcome.

An Andares 

Christmas

The plush Andares mall at Patria and Acueducto has a special seasonal attraction that will delight kids and, perhaps, northerners who miss the snow! Each evening this month, the mall is staging a mock “snowfall” and light show around the Christmas tree.  Are the snowflakes real? You’ll have to go to find out.  The entertainment is scheduled at 6, 7 and 8 p.m. each evening.  

Musical performances take place each evening in Andares’ stage area. The Christmas theme continues with a performance of Nutcracker Suite on Saturday, December 12, 7:15 p.m.; a Christmas Celebration on Sunday, December 13, 7 p.m.; Christmas carols on Tuesday, December 15, 6 p.m.; Christmas Voices on Thursday, December 17 and a repeat of the previous Sunday’s “Celebration” on Friday, December 18, 7 p.m.

Cops looking for 25,000 toys

The Guadalajara Police Department is aiming to collect 25,000 toys to give to needy children. The deadline is December 23.  Toys should not be military, nor need batteries and promote healthy living. Free trees

Free trees, courtesy of the National Forestry Commission, will be handed out at the Ecology Fair in the Colomos Park on Sunday, December 13, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
