Prolific author to speak, sign books at St. Mark’s

Guadalajara-based, U.S. writer Michael Hogan will give a short talk entitled “The Expatriate Writer” at St. Mark’s Anglican Church in Guadalajara at noon, Sunday, September 25, after the English Mass.

The author will have various of his titles available for purchase and signing. The event is planned for St. Mark’s garden, where a light brunch and beverage can be purchased.

Hogan has published 18 books in genres that include police fiction, poetry, teaching English, history and economics. He has also written for magazines such as the Harvard Review.

Perhaps Hogan’s best known book is a social, political and military history entitled “Irish Soldiers of Mexico” that, besides forming the basis for an MGM movie starring Tom Berenger, has been described as “the only major book [about the 19th-century Mexican American War] by a foreigner which is used in Mexican universities today.”

Hogan’s newest book, “A Death in Newport,” is a lighter, fictional work that seems to draw on the author’s own persona. The main character returns from Guadalajara to Newport, Rhode Island — Hogan was born in Newport.

Hogan has also written a book of essays, “Savage Capitalism and the Myth of Democracy,” which has drawn praise from famed academic Noam Chomsky.

In addition to writing, Hogan currently works as a special consultant to the U.S. Department of State’s Office of Overseas Schools.

The entry to his noon presentation is free. The event is planned for St. Mark’s garden, where a light brunch and beverage can be purchased.
