Local flavors on offer at food fest

The Colores y Sabores de Jalisco will showcase traditional artistic and gastronomic products from various parts of the state from Thursday, August 18 to Saturday, August 20.

The center of the festival will be the Ex-Convento del Carmen (Av. Juarez 635). Doors open at 10 a.m. each day and there is no charge.

Other highlights of the festival include a world-record attempt by chef Eustolia Herrera, from Ixtlahuacán de los Membrillos to prepare the biggest and heaviest single piece of cajeta de membrillo (a caramel quince jelly dessert). The piece is expected to measure six by three meters and weigh up to a ton.  The record attempt will take place at the Ex-Convento  on Friday, with the finish set for around 5 p.m. Tasting of the membrillo will then be open to the public. (Guinness will not be present because of the high cost involved, organizers say.)

The festival will also feature two cookbook presentations and a series of lectures and workshops.

Municipalities taking part in the festival are Chapala, Unión de Tula, Ixtlahuacán de los Membrillos, Tecolotlán, Amacueca, Sayula, Zapotlán El Grande, Zacoalco de Torres, La Huerta, La Manzanilla de la Paz, Tenamaxtlán, Tuxpan, Mexticacán, San Ignacio Cerro Gordo and Talpa de Allende.
