Events on offer at American Society in September

The American Society (Amsoc) celebrates Mexico’s Independence Day with a delicious meal of chamorro en adobo (pork shank in adobo) on Thursday, September 15. Chamorro en adobo consists of pork on the bone that has been marinated in a traditional Mexican sauce, then baked slowly until the meat is fork-tender. Tossed salad, refried beans and rice round out this savory meal. Top it off with dessert and creamy flan. Amsoc opens noon; the meal is served at 1 p.m. Cost: 150 pesos.

Tickets available now and must be purchased by September 13, 3 pm.

The Cancer & Health Support Group, which focuses on the latest general and alternative health and psychological care for people diagnosed with cancer, meets   Wednesday, September 14, 1 p.m.  this group is a place for people to discuss their personal experiences with cancer and share their coping mechanisms. It is facilitated by Art Sanchez, a retired, trained and licensed art therapist and cancer survivor. The Thursday,  September 22 Amsoc Book Club meeting  discusses “A Confederacy of Dunces” by John  Kennedy Toole, winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 1981. Says Goodreads Review: “The many subplots that weave through ‘A Confederacy of Dunces’ are as complicated as anything you’ll find in a Dickens novel.” The meeting starts at 10 a.m.

Amsoc needs a volunteer once a week to staff the front desk at the club house in Colonia Chapalita. Among the duties are meeting and greeting new people, talking on the phone, monitoring the security camera, hitting the buzzer for the front gate, browsing through the book and DVD library, collecting membership dues and more.
