Beachfront privatizers beware

Those seeking to privatize beaches in Jalisco could be faced with stiff fines and even jail time, following recent law changes approved by the Jalisco State legislature. 

The law aims to target hoteliers and other businesses who flout federal law by restricting public access to their beachfronts.  Fines could run as high as three million pesos.

Rogue bikers rule the streets

According to Jalisco Department of Planning and Finance, 88 percent of motorcyclists in the state are driving without a license, a state of affairs which presents a clear threat to public safety.  A possible reason for the high number: the fine for riding a motorcycle or scooter without a license is just 73 to 365 pesos.  

Most obese man undergoes surgery

Juan Pedro Franco, 32, considered the world’s most obese man, has undergone a successful gastric operation in a Guadalajara hospital. On Tuesday, surgeons reduced his stomach by three quarters, with the expectation that within the next three months he will lose up to 50 percent of excess weight.  Franco weighed 595 kilos upon entering the hospital for treatment last year.  

Car theft spike

In the first trimester of 2017, car thefts reported in Jalisco increased by 74 percent from the same time last year.  As a result, the state is now second in vehicular larceny in Mexico, up from fourth place last year.
