Treasured Canadian journalist to visit Lakeside

Esteemed, opinionated and often controversial Canadian journalist and author Allan Fotheringham (also known as Dr. Foth) will be the speaker at the next meeting of the Lake Chapala Canadian Club on Wednesday, March 14 at Hotel La Nueva Posada.

For nearly 50 years, Fotheringham has penned his musings in magazines and newspapers around the world, including the South China Morning Post of Hong Kong, the Christian Science Monitor and the Chilliwack Progress, and in Canada, the Vancouver Sun, the Southam News, The Financial Post, Sun Media and the Globe and Mail. He wrote for Maclean’s magazine for 27 years where he made the back page famous and put the magazine on the map. When he retired in 2005, Maclean’s retired that back page, considered to be the finest piece of print real estate in the industry.

He has traveled the world, visiting 89 countries, has reported from the Soviet Union and China and has been in Africa five times over 20 years.

Today, attempting to avoid work (as he puts it) he lives in Toronto counting the days until he can retire to Positano, Italy.

Fotheringham has published nine books, the latest being “Boy from Nowhere, A Life in 91 Countries.” He will comment upon Canadian politics and the United States election and read an excerpt from his book to keep you laughing and then take questions from the audience.

All are welcome at the Canadian Club meeting, including guests, who pay 50 pesos each. Drink tickets will be available for beer, wine or soft drinks. Arrive early to enjoy the social hour at 3 p.m.
