New dog adoption shelter going up

Filling in the gap left when the Animal Shelter closed its dog adoption center in June, volunteers from that facility have begun anew to provide a shelter for abandoned, lost and unwanted dogs to be cared for and placed for adoption.

The new digs, several acres of land donated with a 15-year lease by local attorney and animal activist Mayra Ortiz, is located east of Chapala next to the Ladron Pet Resort.

Veterinarian Antonio Ladron de Guevara will provide developmental support as well as ongoing vet care, flea and worm medications, normal vaccinations and euthanasia services when needed.

Animal Shelter founder Geoffrey Kaye will support the effort by donating all remaining fencing, roofing and equipment from the closed adoption center in Riberas del Pilar. He’ll also regularly supply dog food and limited financial support.

Several volunteers and some of their friends have also pledged financial support for both developmental and ongoing operating costs. Once the site configuration is set and plans have been submitted to contractors for bid, John Kading, who is heading up the project, and volunteers will be asking financial support from the Lakeside community.

Plans for the shelter will include the capacity for holding and processing about 20 animals at a time, nearly double the number held at the former Dog Adoption Center.
