Mexican fiesta to fund Ajijic plaza makeover

The Lake Chapala Society (LCS) will host a fun-filled Tardeada Mexicana on Friday, July 20, 3:30 to 7 p.m. as a benefit for the Ajijic plaza renovation project.

The fiesta will feature a buffet dinner with an assortment of dishes provided by the town’s most popular restaurants, accompanied by hand-made tortillas prepared on site. The San Juan Ballet Folklorico will entertain the crowd with some fancy steps, alternating with a musical.

The 200-peso-per-person price of admission includes a complimentary cocktail, with additional drinks available from the cash bar. Tickets are on sale at LCS, Opus Boutique, Diana Pearl’s Gallery, the local Delegacion government office, Centro Cultural and Licoreria Paz in San Antonio.

The stunning makeover, involving the town’s most accomplished craftsmen, artists and construction workers, is progressing at a steady pace with new eye-popping details appearing every day. However, since government funding for the project has been exhausted, bills for materials that must be covered by the community at large are mounting at a similar pace.

According to project coordinator Moctezuma Medina and design manager Federico Enciso, the current debt stands at 120,000 pesos and will continue rising as the remodeling evolves.

Other fund-raising efforts are also in the works. A jumble sale is slated for Sunday, July 15 at the plaza, starting at 9 a.m. Donated items of all types will be gratefully received throughout the day. Three enticing works of art and a Compaq-brand mini-laptop computer are up for grabs in separate benefit raffles. Coins and bills may also be dropped into a donation box always displayed on the bandstand kiosk during working hours.
