Ajijic pro-plaza committee throws festive fund-raiser

The Ajijic plaza renovation committee entertained a crowd of nearly 100 supporters at the fund-raising fiesta held Friday, July 20 on the lush grounds of the Lake Chapala Society.

Guests enjoyed their fill from the sumptuous taco buffet offering a wide array of tasty fillings served with hand-made tortillas fresh off the grill. An assortment of sweet treats was laid out at the end of the line.

The Tito Hinojosa Trio set a cheerful party mood, belting out classic Mexican tunes as they wandered about for table-to-table serenades. The Son de Mexico ballet folklorico troupe from San Juan Cosala capped off the afternoon bash with an energetic show of regional dances from Guerrero, Veracruz, Nayarit and Jalisco. The group’s seamless performance, directed by Luis Guzman, included multiple costume changes and a festive finale complete with a colorful shower of giant confetti and paper streamers.

Project coordinator Moctezuma Medina expressed his gratitude to the largely expat crowd in attendance, explaining that proceeds from the event will help defray pending bills for labor and materials that have mounted as the plaza makeover project evolved from an ordinary government fix-up plan to an ambitious work of art spearheaded by the town’s most creative minds and hands.

He extend special thanks to the Lake Chapala Society for opening its grounds for the gathering, as well as to Ajijic Tango, Café In Acalli, Café Sazon, Doña Lola, Jardin Plaza, Jose Melendrez, La Bodega, La Nueva Posada, Lalo Ramos, Lilifher, Los Telares, Manix, Posada Ajijic, Hotel Real de Chapala, tortillerias Ajijic, Lety, Maria Elena and Montaña for their contributions to fiesta buffet.

Medina also announced that the pro-plaza committee plans to throw a huge village fair later in the year to continue filling the coffers.
