Lakeside non-profits embrace common goals

Leaders of 17 Lakeside area charitable and non-profit organizations put their heads together to share ideas on matters of mutual interest at a summit meeting convened Wednesday, November 6 under the auspices of the Lake Chapala Society (LCS).

The reps came to a consensus on perpetuating a community calendar as a valuable tool to keep one another appraised of up-coming fund-raising activities, help avoid setting dates that conflict with other events, and get the word out to the public.

The calendar has been managed for the last ten years by Betty Prentki, who is now looking for someone to take over the task of compiling and circulating the information. Events are posted in the calendar section of www.ajijicnews.com and posted monthly in print format on an LCS bulletin board.

“With all the work that goes into putting on a fund-raiser, you can help maximize attendance by not competing with another group’s event,” Prentki observed.

Prentki also handles the “president’s list,” a directory of non-profit groups that contains the name of the organization, presiding officer, a brief mission statement, the relevant telephone, email and website contact information. She says she already has 67 groups on the list, as well as 49 contacts for the calendar, but some of that information is now obsolete. Organizations that missed the meeting are encouraged up-date their data by email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

The non-profits also agreed to participate in a volunteer recruitment fair to be held at LCS next January and to explore the possibility of forming a non-profit consortium to foster networking and engage in dialogue on solving common problems.

Groups represented at the summit were Ajijic Rotary Club, Chapala Red Cross, Colegio de Arquitectos, Feria Maestros del Arte, Have Hammer…Will Travel, Jaltepec Hospitality School, Lake Chapala Shrine Club, LCS, Lakeside School for Children with Special Needs, Love in Action, Lucky Dog Rescue, Niños Incapacitados, Operacion Amor, Operacion Compasion, Operation Feed, Royal Canadian Legion and Tepehua Community Center.
