Lake Chapala's birds under observation

Each month the members of Lake Chapala Birders record the species of birds in the area. Interesting sightings in July included the Blue-black Grassquit, Fulvous Whistling Duck, and the White-tailed Kite – all spotted near Cajititlan. They also report hearing the call of the Northern Bobwhites at a variety of locations.

Late in the month Stan and Darnelle Dunn saw Lesser Yellowlegs and an early migrating Spotted Sandpiper at San Nicolas, while John and Rosemary Keeling saw a Lucifer Hummingbird in the scrub near the International School. These hummingbirds like arid scrub areas and are permanent residents here and across the central transvolcanic range.

A storm destroyed the communal nest of the Monk Parakeets in a palm tree in downtown Ajijic. Five Red-Lored Parrots (feral escapees) are rumored to be seen near the San Antonio Tlayacapan plaza late in the afternoon.

The next bird walk is slated for Tuesday, August 19, when birders will meet at 8 a.m. at Donas Donuts to car-pool to the Rosa Amarilla loop on the plateau on the south side of the lake. There they expect to see higher elevation birds. For information email John Keeling at This email address is being protected from spambots.
