Special Needs School logo contest deadline looms

As the mission of the former School for the Deaf in Jocotopec broadened over the past few years, the student population has become more diverse until this year only 20 percent of the students are hearing impaired.

As a result, the name of the center has been changed to the School for Special Needs Children and now has enrolled youngsters with Down’s syndrome, autistic spectrum syndromes, seizure disorders, paraplegia, and blindness.

Local artists are being encouraged to submit a design for a new logo to better reflect the direction of the renamed school before August 30.

The board will reduce the field to their favorite six submissions during preliminary judging. The artists who have created the final ranking entries will display their logos at the Ajijic Cultural Center for final judging. Local professional artists and the general public will be invited to select their favorites from September 15 through 20. The winner will receive 1,000 pesos and be honored at a September 26 event at the center.

The School for Special Needs Students needs a steady flow of new and returning volunteers to assist with a series of fund raisers including the September 26 Logo Competition, the school’s 35th anniversary celebration on November 13; the annual house tours; and the December 4 auction fashion show.  If you can help, email the volunteer coordinator at This email address is being protected from spambots.
