Chapala celebrates Navy Day in Mexico

Chapala marked the commemoration of the Dia de la Marina (Navy Day) with a traditional ceremony held early Monday, June 1 at the waterfront Malecon. Local Luis Jorge Ochoa presided at the event, accompanied by Mayor Joaquin Huerta and Bernardo Gutierrez Navarro, head of the Jalisco headquarters for the Federal Ministry of Communications and Transport.

Other special guests included Juan Silva, president of the local tour boat cooperative, Denny Strole representing the lakeside branch of the U.S. Navy League, and pro-lake political activist Manuel Villagomez.

Following the formalities the party of dignitaries and tour boat operators set off from the pier for a short nautical jaunt to deposit a memorial wreath honoring persons who have lost their lives in Mexico’s largest lake.
