Weekly Worship - September 26, 2015

Lakeside Presbyterian

With Lakeside Presbyterian Church on track to complete the new church building in late November, Pastor Ross Arnold begins the sermon series “What’s Next: Finishing the Work” on Sunday, September 27. The talks introduce the many programs the church plans to launch with the new building as a base of operations.

As the Apostle Paul encouraged the church in Corinth to finish the great work they had begun (2 Corinthians 8:1-15), so the local group will be challenged to move forward in programs for feeding and clothing the poor, caring for the sick, welcoming the children and visiting those in prison. Worship begins at 10 a.m.

“The Pastor’s Forum” convenes in the church library following worship and refreshments.  Attendees can ask questions about the sermon, the faith, or any other topic of interest.

Lakeside Presbyterian Church is at San Jorge 250 in Riberas del Pilar. Turn toward the lake at Mom’s Deli and go two blocks – the church is on the right.

St. Andrew’s Anglican

Advice giving is Fr. Winston Welty’s least favorite genre of sermons. Nonetheless, he plans to combine a simple childhood tale with a challenging story from Mark’s Gospel in “Red Flowers with Green Stems,” the sermon topic for the Sunday, September 27 service at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church.

The stories advise people of faith to be more spontaneous, genuine, non-controlling, and affirming even of those with whom they disagree.

Sunday School begins at 9:45 a.m. Refreshments are served in the garden following the 10 a.m. worship service. Donations are received on the last Sunday of each month to provide lunches for Mezcala schoolchildren. Every Sunday, the feeding program supported by St. Andrew’s welcomes donations of non-perishable food items. Leave donations in the baskets by the church doors.

The men of the parish will gather for lunch on Wednesday, September 30, noon at Just Chillin’ in Villa Nova.

St. Andrew’s is at Calle San Lucas 19, a block south of the Carretera in Riberas del Pilar.

Unitarian Universalists

Trudy Crippen will give the talk “A Covenant is More Than Words” during the Sunday, September 27, 10:30 a.m. meeting of the Lake Chapala Unitarian Universalists (UU).

She will talk about the problem of incivility in all groups, including the UU and why the UU Covenant of Good Relations is really important to the group. The fellowship convenes for brunch or lunch at Min Wah after the meeting.

The local group now has an enhanced personal sound system that is helping those with hearing issues during the Sunday services. Attendees may use headphones or ear buds connected to an FM radio or FM capable cell phone to increase the clarity of sound.

The Lake Chapala Unitarian Universalists is an English-speaking, lay-led fellowship that meets every week on the west side of Ajijic in Plaza de la Ribera, a wheelchair-accessible facility at Rio Bravo 10A.

Christ Church

Christ Church Episcopal will celebrate the 18th Sunday after Pentecost by celebrating the Holy Eucharist Rite I at The Little Chapel by the Lake in Chula Vista on Sunday, September 27 at 9:30 a.m. Fr. Danny Borkowski will preside. His message is titled “Salt Is Good,” based on Mark 9:38-50.

The congregations of Christ Church and Little Chapel share a common coffee fellowship between their respective services from 10:35 until 11:10 a.m.

The congregations also participate in a “sing-along” at a senior living facility on the last Wednesday of the month. The September 30, 4:30 p.m. event at Casa Nostra will be under the leadership of Belva Velazquez, music director of The Little Chapel by the Lake.

The Tuesday Bible Study sponsored by Christ Church Episcopal meets at 2 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall of The Little Chapel by the Lake to delve into the Gospel of John.

New Hope

The congregation of the New Hope Christian Fellowship will begin the Sunday, September 27 service with a period of fellowship and refreshments at 10:30 a.m. The regular worship service which follows will feature a message by Dr. Daniel Boatright, a former medical missionary in Nicaragua who is now doing similar work at lakeside. His topic is “Making A Disciple,” based on Matthew 28:18-20.

As always, the group’s fellowship will continue with a meal at a local restaurant following the service.

New Hope Christian Fellowship currently meets at the home of Pastor Gene Raymer at Privada Jesus Garcia 11 in San Antonio Tlayacapan. For more information or directions, call (376) 766-3435.

San Andres English

Says Fr. Basil G. Royston, D. Min.: “We praise God for all his prophets: men and women of every nation and creed and of every time they have resisted evil and manifested the Spirit in their lives.”

Royston will recall this theme in his homily at the English Mass on Sunday, September 27, 9 a.m. in San Andres Catholic parish church.

Buddhist Community

When the Heart of Awareness Community meets on Wednesday, September 30, Noble Silence begins at 4 p.m., followed by a formal meditation, dharma teachings and discussion at 4:30 p.m. The final video segment of Andrew Holecek’s Tricycle Retreat teaching on transforming relationships with death and dying, “What to Do After Death,” will be shown.

The sangha is at Guadalupe Victoria 101, suites A-B, in Ajijic. The Heart of Awareness is a non-sectarian community grounded in the teachings of the Buddha as preserved in the Theravada/Vipassana tradition. Prior experience or affiliation is not required.
