‘Mr. Hammer’ moves forward with new moniker, programs

Have Hammer Will Travel, the popular local carpentry and cabinetry program for area youth, this week announced a new executive board and a series of changes that are sure to be popular at lakeside.

The board of directors have come up with a new community-friendly nickname for the organization: Mr. Hammer.  The board includes President Mike Ouimet, Vice President Eloy Gonzalez and Secretary/Treasurer Cindy Thompson.

Heading the schedule is a new senior class for aspiring cabinetmakers and those wishing to improve their DIY skills. Class sessions will be taught in English and Spanish by the group’s master carpenter on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 10 a.m. until noon. Currently there are openings available in two other bilingual classes designed for area youth and teens.

Mr. Hammer also announced plans this week to begin a new joint-effort project in November. All classes will be participating in the building, painting and delivering of dog houses for local animal rescue groups. A blanket drive will also be held with the hope of delivering a blanket with each dog house.

The students, teachers and officers of Mr. Hammer also have many other new plans on the drawing board. They hope members of the lakeside community will visit the classrooms and shop at Carretera 110 in Riberas del Pilar to have a look.
