Weekly Worship - April 1, 2016

St. Mark’s Anglican, Guadalajara

On Sunday, April 3,  English Mass begins at the regular time, 10:30 a.m., and Dr. Jim Priddy’s sermon will focus on the day’s readings, including the famous story of “doubting Thomas” in John 20 and the account in Acts 5 of the apostles, taken before their Jewish leaders and testifying that Jesus had risen.  The choir will sing English Easter hymns derived from 16th century Latin, French and German tunes.

Also on April 3, the death of former St. Mark’s parishioner Brayton Wood will be remembered with flowers donated by his wife Chela and the decision of the Desmond Tutu Foundation to divest from oil will be celebrated by recycling and reducing use of disposable dishes.

St. Mark’s holds Sunday services in English at 10:30 a.m. Chichimecas 836, corner of Aztecas.

Unitarians

Thomas Dowdy-Winslett’s presentation at the Lake Chapala Unitarian Universalist Fellowship on Sunday, April 3 is entitled “Spiritual Migration.”

Using the third UU principle, “Acceptance of One Another and Encouragement to Spiritual Growth in Our Congregation,” and the image of migratory animals, Dowdy-Winslett will discuss his own spiritual journey from fundamental Christianity to find a place of acceptance and growth.

The service leader is Donna Burroughs.

The Unitarians have moved.  They now meet 10:30 a.m. at their new facility located at Hidalgo 261 in Riberas del Pilar opposite the bell tower, on the north side of the Carretera.

Little Chapel

The Little Chapel by the Lake’s guest speaker for the Sunday, April 3, 11:15 a.m. service will be Roy Trueblood, who will talk on “Unfinished Business.” The scriptures are John 21:15-17 and Luke 5:1-11. Coffee hour before the service begins at 10:30 a.m.

The Little Chapel is a nondenominational Christian fellowship. It is located at Carretera 10 in Chula Vista, east of the golf course entrance. Call 766-2538 for more information.

Christ Church Episcopal

Christ Church Episcopal will observe the Second Sunday of Easter, “Low Sunday,” by celebrating the Holy Eucharist, Rite Two, at 9:30 a.m. at the Little Chapel by the Lake.

Fr. Danny Borkowski will preside and give a message with the theme “Conquering Chaos,” based on John 20:19-31. Come and recall the story of doubting Thomas.

The congregations of Christ Church and the Little Chapel share a common fellowship time between their two services, from about 10:35 until 11:10 a.m.

The Little Chapel is located at Carretera 10 in Chula Vista.

Christ Church sponsors a Bible Study at 2 p.m. on Tuesday afternoons. Join them and spend an hour tackling the Book of Genesis.

The Lakeside Singers are taking April off.

St. Andrew’s Anglican

After setting the clocks ahead on Saturday night, a perhaps bleary-eyed congregation will gather for 10 a.m. worship on “Doubting Thomas Sunday” at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church.

Fr. Winston Welty’s sermon, “Meeting God Demands Company,” suggests that Thomas’ doubt, like our own, has more to do with isolation than lack of faith. The children’s bilingual Sunday School is at 9:45 a.m., and a coffee hour in the Garden follows the worship service.

Every Sunday, the feeding program supported by St. Andrew’s welcomes weekly donations of non-perishable food items, left in the baskets by the church doors.

Are you concerned about what to do in an emergency, or how to manage medical problems?  St. Andrew’s Anglican is offering four seminars to help with planning for medical care, emergencies and end-of-life issues.  The first seminar will be Saturday, April 9, 10:30 a.m. at the church.  A representative of the Red Cross will provide information on how we can be better-prepared if we should need to call them.

St. Andrew’s is at Calle San Lucas 19, a block south of the Carretera in Riberas del Pilar.

Lake Chapala Baptist

Brother Bob Hendrick offers these words of wisdom: “There is parlor game called ‘Two Truths and a Lie.’ Each person tells two true stories about themselves and one that is not true. The challenge is for the other players to guess which story is a lie. Some people are good at the game because they have lived through some amazing events that no one would suspect. Some are good at the game because they are ‘adept story tellers’ (good liars). Some cannot tell a believable lie and some cannot recognize a lie.  The writer to the Hebrews agrees with the Apostle Paul’s letter to Titus when he says God cannot lie, not because there is anything at which He is not adept, but because He is holy. You can trust God’s word.”

The Lake Chapala Baptist Church is at Santa Margarita 179 in Riberas del Pilar.

Lakeside Presbyterian

After the celebration and excitement of Easter, it’s important for us to understand that there is still more to come – the follow-up event that Easter made possible, when Jesus will come again, says Pastor Ross Arnold of Lakeside Presbyterian Church.

On Sunday, April 3, Arnold Church will unwrap the expectation all Christians should have for the triumphant return of Jesus in his sermon, “He Will Come Again.”

Lakeside Presbyterian Church is meeting in their new church building in Riberas.  Turn towards the lake at Mom’s Restaurant, the church is two blocks down on the right. English-language services at 10 a.m. and Spanish-language services at noon.

San Andres English

On Sunday, April 3, Fr. Basil G. Royston, D. Min. will offer this homily: “We worship Christ who was dead and is now alive for ever and ever.  He is present in our midst, bringing healing and peace.”

This Sunday the San Andres Mass Community will have a “First Sunday of the Month Food Drive” to help support the children at the Villa Infantil orphanage and the sisters who care for them. Please consider bringing a non-perishable food item, toilet tissue, cleaning products, and the like to Sunday’s Liturgy.

San Andres is located at the corner of Ramon Corona and Parroquia, one block from the Ajijic main plaza.

HU Chant

Chanting HU, an ancient name for the Divine, while in a contemplative state, is a simple technique to open your heart to greater happiness, love, inner peace and understanding.  Join in on Saturday, April 2, 10:30 a.m., at the Center for Spiritual Living located at Nicholas Bravo 17, Ajijic, for a short (30 minutes) group HU Chant followed by refreshments and fellowship time. New Hope Christian

The non-denominational congregation of New Hope Christian Fellowship will return to its regular worship schedule on Sunday, April 3. A refreshment period prior to the 11 a.m. worship service will allow time to fellowship with one another and to select a location for the after service lunch.

The worship service will begin with prayer and hymns. Gabriel Gorman will present the lesson for Children’s Church and later Pastor Gene Raymer will deliver the message “Another Way? ... Not!”

Says the pastor, “The Devil tries to convince us that we can do things the way we want to and still claim the title Christian. But Jesus teaches us that He is THE way, not A way. And we must adhere to His teachings to be a true servant of Christ.”

The congregation meets in the upper room of the Presbyterian Church in Riberas del Pilar.

For more information or specific directions, call the pastor at (376) 766-3435 or cel (333) 724-6179.
